Good Luck Kevinlee

If you have never worked on cars you are definately in for an education. First you need to get some tools. But working on cars is something that is learned over years of tinkering, and I think that you have to have the right kind of mind to do it. I have been taking stuff apart and putting it back together (mostly) since I was a kid. I bought my first Mercedes (1955 220a when I was 15. Never got it running but learned alot. I'm not saying that you can't learn, but that maybe you have ot have it in your blood. Doing the regular maintainence (the easy stuff) can save you some money, but where you can really save is on the big jobs, like fixing the AC or rebuilding the front end (the hard stuff). If nothing else, put the car on Ebay and make some money from it. I just paid $2,250 for a 1985 300TD (stationwagon) with some rust and 333,000 miles and think I got a pretty good deal.

My 240D doesn't have AC either and the guy I bought it from said he had had it filled and it went dead again, so I started snooping around under the hood and it turns out the AC hose had been rubbing up against the bolt that sticks up from the shock absorber and wore a hole right trough it. Everything is in good shape other that the hole in the hose. Check this out forst, before attempting to fill it and blowing (!) money out the hose, so-to-speak.
If you want to make a quick $1,000.00 or so and don't mind driving it to Canada I will happily rid you of that really really really OLD car,

Buy it.

Then sell it to one of us people who live "way up North".

A/C is just a useless hunk of metal that we unbolt and throw away. Kind of like a big EGR valve, only heavier.

I find it very hard to believe you don't use any A/C in Minnesota. You guys have some very brutal summers. How else would you have so many "skeeters".

I'll second that motion. Everytime that I visited MSP in the summer or early fall, the humidity is unbelievably bad. I don't see how you can survive there without a/c.

300d

having owned benzes (about 30) and volvos (one) and my dad drove a lot of volvos for years, i believe that the repairs on the benz will not be a lot different. some things will cost more but some things will cost less. the benz is made a whole lot better. excepting the ac controls which are not the best but if sorted once by a good benz specialty shop they should last a good long while. but do have it checked by someone qualified. good luck.

Well I put a battery in and drove it home the other day. Finally got around to taking some pics. I"m taking it into Atwood European on Tue to have a good look at it and see what kind of overall shape it's in. (a shop that was recomended by DaveL in the good MB shop forum)

Nice looking car.
Make sure that the trap oxidizer has been changed to an oxidizing catalyst. The shop you're taking it to should be able to tell you if it has. If they say they can change it for you, run!

I'm in Az. The cars been in this state for at least 10 years I think. Is that trap oxidizer a problem issue?
