1966 200d maiden run

for those of you who have followed the events of the cincinnati 200d i am proud to report that the first trip of 5 miles pretty much was a suscess.
after replacing the entire braking system(did use a 123 brake booster) remember it had set for 20 years plus) i was ready for the test, got the salt shaker good and red, engaged the starter and felt those 50 horses come to life, dropped her into drive and gave it all the fuel,i could have sworn i saw the front end lift close to 30 thousands of an inch, the old girl was ready so i lifted the pedal a bit to get her thru the gears, was now close to 35 mph and the wing windows were bringing in the fresh air.had planned my route so as to avoid the 18 wheelers so was close to the entrance ramp at the airport ready to merge on to the i65 south(figured i had a good half mile to get her to 55 so as not to get rear ended by the boys headed south from indy),well did glance at the barber type speed indicator and had gone past 50 and was ready for the merge, there i was arm laying on the open window frame, giving a thumbs up to ALL the drivers making 70+ and passing her up,saw my exit and let her coast to the red light, man it felt good(did move the shifter to neutral so as to smooth out the vibrations, engine needs motor mounts)got her turned around and now felt it time to test the down shifting at 20mph,felt a rumble that wasnt part of the design, slowed down and into the emergency lane, after a 2 minute inspection i found that the right front tire had broken a belt (rayon) and had expanded to cause the car to raise and lower about a inch as it rolled alone.feeling invincible now it was time to return her to the shop for a set of tires. it shouldnt be too hard to find a set that would withstand the proposed 72 mph top speed, would like to find the old white walls if some one knows a source.
will keep you posted

Thumbs up

Should get a video!

There's a '69 220D for sale locally, it's maroon... I can only imagine how slow it is...

hit man, there's a huge difference between a '66 200D and a '69 220D albeit they're pretty similar in the power category.

Thanks
David

Peh And Vox,ref Brake Booster

Peh I Suppose I Will Operate With The 123 Booster On The 200d,dont Suspect It To Ever Need Another But If So The 123 Should Be A Easy Find.
Vox,the Retro Fit Didnt Involve Much At All, Drill With A 5/8 In Drill Bit One Side Of The Yoke That Connects To The Brake Pedal To Allow The Old Bolt To Fit, This Allows The Adjustment For Free Play In The Brake Pedal.install A Vac Check Valve From Vac Pump To Booster Because The 200d Car Booster Has A Internal Check Valve.i Just Uses A Complete Plastic Hose Assy From A Wrecked 82 240d And Added A Hose To Connect To The 200d Vac Pump.was Either A 1/2 In Or 5/8 In Fuel Hose(sorry I Slept Since Then). I Installed A New Master Cyl That Was Same As The Old One, Didnt Want To Fight Those Steel Brake Lines And With A Small Amount Of Tweeking The Lines It Fit Right Up And Brakes Are Good. Never Drove E New One But Dont See How They Could Be Much Better.
Will Get Pictures Later, Am Getting Ready To Go To Boston To Get Joe Wilsons 1987 300td Wagon, Wish Me Luck As I Will Need All The Help I Can Get To Drive It 1000 Miles.

Try http://www.coker.com/
I found an original set of Firestone WWW's for my '51 Cadillac from them. Might be a long shot for MB's but worth a try.

On tires, you might find 13" tough to find. Another option is converting to 14" rims on all four wheels. Even BundtCakes will fit.

I think Larry P was wanting the car to look original. IMO, I think bundts on a '66 would look strange.
