so... my tranny just took A dump on me!

I wonder what happened? it's an 82 240d auto 330,000 miles on it I was driving along today stoplight to stoplight then the light turned green I hit the pedal and it just reved no gears what so ever nothing only thing that works is park no reverse no nothing the motor works fine, just the tranny. so what do youthink happened and how much is it going to cost? BTW I do drive it like I stole it it's only way it will get up to speed I hope that had no bearing on the problem.

They love to be driven hard. I've had a couple of trannies go but they gave plenty of warning. Lots and lots of slipping before. ????

there was no slipping with mine everything was fine no indacation what so ever. for some reason I know Iam going to pay for this one and it's going to be A large chunk O money!

turbodiesel 04-17-2005 11:00 PM

Maybe the trans pump completely failed.. no pressure = no go!

braverichard 04-17-2005 11:17 PM

Was that the original tranny? If so then it has served the car well. 330,000 miles is no joke!

jeremy 04-17-2005 11:23 PM

Iam not quite sure if it is the orginal trans, either way like you say that's pretty good, so I will suck itup and deal with it. I will find out more tomorrow thanks for the replys. I have to go to bed now

B2 piston failure??? No forward gears off idle + good reverse = B2 piston broken

do a search on that

braverichard 04-17-2005 11:41 PM

No. It can't be the B2 piston. He has no reverse. Here's a quote of what he said:

replace the filter and fluid.

maybe it is just dirty and causes major slippage.

If not just get a used one .

is that a 4 or 6 bolt trans in an 82 240?

I had a 4 bolt in my 78 240D, jumpstarting a friend and when I got in to leave, I had nothing, forward or reverse. front pump had locked up and sheared the teeth off the torque converter.

I'm educated guessing the same has happened to you. I have a spare 4 bolt trans if you need one.

Tranny brake belt.

Brandon314159 04-18-2005 02:43 AM

I have a spare 4-bolt transmission for sale from a 79 240D. Going price is very reasonable :)

I would check fluid levels and filter/pan condition....maybe it got dented?

DieselBone 04-18-2005 08:55 AM

opps!!!

Sorry, I wish I could read sometimes...... :rolleyes2

It could be dirt, I don't see how a pump could just go bad on the spot. Did he ever say if it was doing anything odd before this happened???

Same thing happened to me. It was a rainy morning. Just drove my daugther to school. Wouldnt go anymore when the lights turned green. Fortunately, a gas station was in the corner. Pushed the car to the station. Boy-I could see that rainbow streak on the road as the fluid mixed with the rain water. Apparently the transmission cooling line on the driver side cracked near the clip thats attached to the oil pan.

Very good point...might open the radiator cap and see if any of the trans fluid made it into the coolant. (Assuming none is on the ground!)
