The Pentas on the W123 are 16"...not sure what sizes them came in......but I know there were several depending on the year and application.

the Ronals on the W116 ar the 15" variety.....I wanted 16" but when I had the chance to grab that set for $250 I hopped on them.

Nice Pictures, Great looking Cars.

I am not at all familiar with the W116... 300SD. Were all 300SD's baised on the W116 or were the later ones part of the W126 clan?

And the W123, 300D was powered by the same engine, but was a little smaller car? was one sold as a mid size and the other a full sized model?

any enlightenment is appreciated. (I think I want a 300SD W116 next! how hard are they to find??)

THe early 300SD was the W116 chassis, the first diesel of that class was in 1978. The last W116 300SD was made in 1980. THe earliest 126 300SD was sold in Europe in 1980 but the first ones to make it here were in 1981. I understand there actually was a few months of overlap on production.

The W116 300SD was a far more expensive car than the W123 300D....almost $48K dollars in 1979 I understand.......the W123 240 was half that. THe 300D I don't know.

The W116 was an "S" class vehicle.....drive the two and you will never believe the difference.

The W123 is a bit quiter, but the W116 is far more comfortible and a far better drivers car. I can't compare the W126 to either as I have never ridden in one nor driven one yet.

The first picture is an optical illusion due to the angle of the shot....the Tan W116 is the larger car....even if it looks otherwise in the photo.

And keep in mind .......I retrofitted Euro Bumpers and Euro Headlights onto my W116.............I didn't buy it that way...same with the Ronal R9 rims that is on the W116, it can with the 14" bundt cake rims, Or Baroque Rims as the Germans call them.

The problem is that you will have to look long and hard for one that has no rust.

Then when you find it, you have to bend right over because it is going to be painfully expensive, relatively speaking.

But, you have little choice. Purchasing one of them with rust and mediocre maintenance will kill you in the long run.

Oh well, I am on a fortifed shoestring at the moment... may be a W116 gasser would be an option? what models numbers did they make? or were the W116's less bomb proof than the W123's?
Leaning that it is more of a "driver's car" makes the heart ache, and the reason departs soon there after.

280SE 6 Cylinder

450SE V-8 gas hog...

And the Uber W116 a 450SE 6.9 not a car for the weak of heart or the weak of wallet...they cost a lot to maintain..and a poorly maintained one is a bottomless money pit.

THe 300SD is longer lived..............than the Gassers...and inexpensive good examples are out there to be found. I bought mine from Tempe AZ for $3,200 with 112k miles but I have put that much into it fixing little things.
THe weaknes the W116 had was in the Rust belt....

It rusted easier than the W123.

Well, I am learning. Thanks for the training wheels session. At least Now I know what I might be looking for. May be a 280CE or a 300SD. (to convert the 280 CE...to diesel. Bad Idea I know but it is just a dream )

In Vermont...if you find and have a rust free example shipped in to you I would keep it a fair weather car....my 300SD stays off the road from the first snow..untill the second hard rainfall after the last snowfall in spring. So its not exposed to salt. If you get a rusty one drive it to death before it falls apart. Unless you are a body man...or close relatives are body men rusty cars are expensive to fix correctly.
