Request for help whit OM617 910
I have bought a W115 240D 3.0 that was stop for 2 years and refuses to start. The former owner assures me that the car was running when he parked the car.The engine turns when I turn the key. The glow plugs get hot.
What we have done: - Removed all of the diesel from the tank replaced it whit fresh one. - replaced the diesel filter and clean the cup (it was black and had a black mud in the bottom, 1mm) - Removed and clean the glow plugs and all of the contacts. - Cleaned same oil in the air intake - Removed the air from the pipes and check that diesel arrives to the injectors My questions: Next step clean the injectors? Diesel burns after 2 years? Do I have to purge the diesel pump? Its sill filled whit old diesel. Is normal that there are only same drops coming out from the pipe that connects to the injector when I turn the key or should I get a more? Any ideas besides cheeking the injectors? Is it ok to open and clean the injectors? Thank you all in advance Vasco |

Their might be a second pre filter located lower on fuel line. Usually clear plastic. Plus there is a filter assembley in tank. I would try to blow air down the fuel line from the point before the lift pump back into tank with fuel cap off to see if system really clear from that point back. Perhaps not a factor though as you mention pumping up fuel with your hand pump. Also I do not know if reverse check valve in that system but suspect not. Someone else may know and leave answer. Do not have enough experience but line or filters may be bunged up pretty bad with algea growth. Not a problem here in cold climate. Fungicides available for these problems. Also consideration has to be given to honesty of vendor. Some unfortunatly are not exactly truthful. Why not give car a glo cycle and spray some wd-40 into intake just to verify engine is basically capable of running? It only takes a few minutes to do. Then pursue the fuel system further if engine runs. Also I wish i could pass along the best way to flush out pump, injection lines, and injectors but pretty sure someone else will know a good method.

Thanks for the tips, I have checked the smaller filter and it looks ok. I’m sure that the diesel arrives in the injectors, I’m just not sure if the drops I get (in the metal tube that connects to the injector, open them to bleed the pipes) when I run the start engine are sufficient.
I really don’t think the vendor, a mechanic, is lying, I bought the car as a parts car for the price he asked (300€) there was no need for lying, but you never know. “Why not give car a glo cycle and spray some wd-40 into intake just to verify engine is basically capable of running” I’m not sure what you mean but the cylinders go up and down when I run the starter engine. In guessing if it not glued it should start even if it doesn’t have compression. The glow plugs look to be working, that’s why I am guessing the injector must be blocked (that and because the fuel filter was so dirty) |

Your type of post is becoming somewhat more frequent. Sorry did not explain the wd-40 thing better. Will now. Remove air cleaner top. Get friend to start glow plug cycle. When glow light goes out spray wd-40 into intake right away. Of course have friend start to run starter the second glow light goes out. Gives you the clue to spray the wd-40 and plugs are still hot. This proves glow plugs are working well and engine has enough compression to start. Then you pretty well know problem is in fuel circuit as you have replaced it temporarily with the wd-40. Now if engine does not start you know you may have some other problem from no glow plug cycle to low compression. Just notice a few cars being purchased not running recently and this divides things up pretty well. Your finding a black deposit in system indicates at one time there was a fungus growth either quite a while ago or recently in fuel. Someone else mentioned the wd-40 thing helps to prime injection pump as well. Did you fill new filter with fuel?

Thanks again Barry. I believe I might have found the problem. I had a confirmation that old diesel Ill not burn and just realise that I never purged the injection pup. It seems that there is same thing like a litter of old diesel inside… Ill purge the diesel pup this weekend and try again to start the engine.

old fuel will definately cause a nostart.if this does not rectify try dropping a teaspoon of motoroil in the air intake.the piston rings could be stuck due to inactivity.this will give you some temporary compression.
