Oil Change for 1999 E300D
I just purchased a 1999 E300D with 50,000 miles about a week ago. I was checking the owners manual and there is no engine listing for the oil weight. So here are my questions:
1. What oil weight should I use? (I live in northern Ohio where there is a broad temperature range throughout the year.) 2. The manual shows changing the oil at 12,000 miles! That scares me. I do not like to go more than 5,000 miles max. Any thoughts. 3. Should I use a special wrench on the hex to remove the oil filter cap? 4. Is there anything specail that should be done when replacing the filter? (On my 1985 300D I soak the filter in oil before installing to reduce oil priming time) 5. Is there a drain on the pan? Thanks, Nate |

2) The FSS will start you off with a "credit" of 10000 miles. I prefer 7500.It's up to you. 3) You don't need a special wrench. Just a BIG one. 4) I don't do anything to the filter but soaking it won't hurt. 5) There is a drain on the pan but get a Topsider and suck it through the dipstick tube. You won't have to get under the car AND will get the same amount of oil out.

I'd go for Delvac 1 or Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, whichever of the 2 is on sale. Both are the same product, different bottle and unlike Mobil 1 0W40, theya re CI-4 rated.

oil change for 1999 300d
I bought a 99 300d with 52K it about 4 months ago and I want to change the oil. The previous owner just did the oil change before I picked it up, the car has 58K on it now.
I own 1992 300D (268K) also. My question is I went to remove the oil filter, I could not get the cartridge off. It seems to move down the shaft (plastic which was weird) a bit but no much more. I did want to force it so I put it back together, am I doing something wrong, the oil change on the 92 300D was simple and I thought this would be to. Mike 92 300D 268K 99 300D 52K |

Mobil Delvac 1 and Turbo Diesel Truck USED to be the same product, but no longer are. Look at the product data sheets on the Mobil site and you'll see that they're different.
M1 TDT is perfectly adequate and less expensive than Delvac 1.....you can get a 5 qt. jug at Walmart for $27 or so.

Also, Truck and SUV is no longer in a 5w40 formulation.

Delvac isn't an approved oil for the 97-99 E300's. Never has been.
The factory fill was M1 European Blend 0W/40. Remove the cap/filter and give the plastic piece sticking out from below the filter a gentle smack on a solid surface. The filter will slip down and off. R&R 3 orings that came in the filter box. One on the lid and two on the shaft.

There is a special socket from Mercedes that works nicely on the filter. It came with my car when I bought it. Be happy to provide the part number if you want it.
I too was concerned about going 10K between oil changes on this diesel when I got it. However, I have done a couple of oil analyses at 10K and the report came back very good - the oil still had plenty of life left in it. Believe the 10K interval - it works. As Terry says, the spec for the oil is 229.3/229.5. Mobil 1 0W40 meets it. Mobil 1 Turbodiesel/truck 5W40 or Delvac doesn't.
