What Are The Preferred Brands.........?????

new guy here, just bought my first 300D about a month ago, been driving an F250 6.9 for about 7 years now.

First question, need to replace the glow plugs, what is the preferred brand?

Should I go with Bosch or is there something better?

next question:

what is the preferred brand of coolant that will provide the cavitation protection and other properties necessary to getting a lot more miles out of this old classic?

Last question:

previous owner tried to bypass old dead power antenna by patching in a universal mount antenna, and trying to splice into the original antenna coaxial cable with miserable failure.

I have purchased a Hirschmann replacement antenna and coax, but need to know how to snake the new cable up to the radio, has anyone done this sucessfully, and if so please speak up.

Trying to tackle the basics right now, will be posting on other problems related to cruise and dash lights and ticking noise coming from under the dash when the door is openned, brakes are applied, etc.

It sounds like a turn signal flasher noise, it goes away after about 30 seconds.

If anyone has any input for any of these questions, I would definitely appreciate some feedback.

I would stick with Bosch GP's personally. You didn't mention what year your 300D is, if it is a six cylinder, aluminum head, you want only aluminum friendly anti-freeze in there, if it's a five cyl, standard green anti-freeze is OK.

I can't answer on the antenna or clicking sound under dash. maybe someone else can chime in......BB

Well, Bosch glow plugs are the reccomended brand. As for anti-freeze, go with Zerex G05 or MB brand. These MB radiators have to use this certain kind of anti-freeze. If you have the green stuff, flush it all out real good and replace it with Zerex or MB brand anti-freeze when the time comes to replace the fluid. As for the other stuff, I don't know, but cruise control failure is a problem on older MB's, check this out http://www.mindspring.com/~houlihan/merc/cruise.htm

Actually there are some aluminum parts in the '85 300D cooling system, so stick with MB antifreeze or Zerex G05. You'll have water pump leaks/failure with the green stuff. I know the hard way.

bosch 80006. ~$8 each.
ditto on the G-05 or MB coolant. open the block drain to get all the green stuff out. from what i have gathered here there aren't any cavitation issues with these engines as with the fords.
good luck!

big jake,

You might also consider Evans waterless coolant. No corrosion because it uses no water. 375*F boiling point so you dont need a pressurized system.

Works for me in my 300SD and 300DSDL and Ford tractor.

Thumbs up

My Bosch GPs took a poo on me within a short order, go figure. But my Bosch alt is still kicking with a new Bosch volt reg on it with 217K mi... I have Champion GPs now and they've lasted just as long as the Boschs. NGK also makes some GPs for the 617 motor.

What are you missing from the antenna? A harness or the entire coax cable from the antenna to the radio?

I'm running green stuff that it safe for aluminum parts. I have no problems with it at all.

Bosch or Beru, the original plugs I replaced were Beru. Autozone usually has them for pretty cheap.

As everyone has said just use MB or G-05 coolant.
