They may be good life extending items but they make it pretty hard to check for wear.

$58 per shield. That's to protect a $20 part. I think I can live with out the shields.

um, it's 58.00 per shield to protect a 4000.00 part.
the motor mounts failing could easily cause the oil cooler line to be cut, not to mention the a/c lines. and or other items that could lead to catastrophic engine failure.

Only if you are a complete git and let them degrade that far.

I forgot to put them on when I was replacing my mounts. Oops.

One of the first things replaced on my SD last year when got it. I opted not to put the shields in because of the cost and the fact the old ones lasted 24 yrs. The previous owner kept awesome records of everything done to this car so I know they were original. I regulary clean my engine compartment so I don't believe it will be a issue because if anything were to drip on the them it would be cleaned off right away.

The link to the photo of the Heat Shied is broken. Does anyone have a photo or better diagram on how it looks? I don't have any and am replacing the mounts this weekend. I'd like to see what I have lying around that I could make work.

I had the stock shield for the drivers side. Not seeing one on the passenger side I took a piece of Aluminum flashing for the other mount. So far it has deflected SOME of the oil from the mount. In retrospect I should have taked an oil based paint (preferably bright orange) and painted the rubber themselves. I've seen painted rubber last decades longer than bare rubber.

Test the mount rubber before painting..
I have had a few extreme cheap aftermarket ones react = melt the new rubber.

Here are good photos of the heat shield. Courtesy of JHZR2.

Engine Mount Heat Shields

Unfortunately these pics are also hosted on photobucket as in the broken link you mentioned. So they'll probably disappear at some point time.
