If it aint broke don't fix it

If it ain't broke don't fix it vs. preventative maintenance.

I have reason to believe that my alternator works just fine. Right now its on my bench. I took it off in preparation for a engine bay degrease/powerwash extravagnaza.....

With regard to the alternator.....I removed the brushes/regualtor and cleaned them alittle, I "erasered" the copper where the brushes contact. I reassembled it and it awaits reinstallation.....While Ive got it on my bench is there anything else I should consider regarding PM or should I leave well enough alone.....

If you can work a little grease into the bearings it would do them good. I use white lithium grease in a spray can.

t,

Why so much for the brushes. Last ones I bought were about $5 and that was from the dealer. Opps, maybe because it was ~15 years ago.

Take it down to any parts shop and put it on their starter/alternator tester. A two minute test might save you pulling the thing out again.
