My '95 E300d has this curious characteristic---the many 0-rings in the fuel supply system fail one at a time in no particular order. The result is that wonderful diesel smell
in the engine compartment, with occasional odors in the cabin. I'm now about to replace them for the third time, It seems to me that these o-rings should last longer than two years. Should these rings be coated with lube or installed dry? Anyone have a similar situation? Thanks to all who reply.

Fuel brand?

Many times diesel fuel systems have problems with LOW sulfur fuels, different brands of fuel can contribute to problem. I have replaced way too many of the "o-rings". Also have tried installing complete new lines. 3-4 years seems to be the norm as far as longevity. Even the newer 96-98's have simular failure rates. I use a vasoline type assembly lubricant.

Thanks for the quick response. I normally try to buy shell or fina at high volume truck stops outside the DFW metro area. Occasionally I buy from an in-town fuel stop that sells the "reformulated" diesel. That fuel produces lower MPG in my experience, a possible tradeoff for reduced emissions. Perhaps the reformulated fuel also has an additive that degrades the o-rings? In checking my records,it seems that the leaks coincide with the fuel change, as you surmised.
In closing, what a great forum we have at our disposal.
Many thanks to all who take the time to respond.
