stupid questions.............

i have recently started leaking oil from the lower end of my oil cooler. i know the cooler was replaced along with a factory engine 24 months ago. my stupid question is can i use a teflon tape or another thread sealer on the lower hose?

i am also having a hard time getting into skinnerbox w116 manual and i need to know what the gap on the valves are for the w116.

You need to take a careful look at the cooler and determine what is leaking.

Is it the coupling nut from the hose?

Is it the fitting on the cooler?

It all depends on exactly where the leak is.

Boneheaddoctor has the specs on the W116, I'm sure.

i think its the line.......

last weekend i was knee deep in a sunroof motor nightmare and i noticed that the cooler was leaking. i got under there and started to unscrew the lower hose and decided at that time i didnt want too open another can of worms. i tightened the hose and now it is leaking worse than ever. when i say worse than ever i mean a puddle the size of a paint can lid every morn.

i would assume it is the line................

is there a o-ring or can i use a thread sealer????????????????

thx,
dave

more stupid quesions.....

another thing that i have noticed is that after the car warm's up the idle will drop from 7500 to around 3500 and it starts to run rough..........

any ideas or suggestions

dave

also i took it to a shop today and asked questions and a mech. came out and said that on the fuel inj. unit the adjustment bolt with lock nut "i forgot what he called it" was all the way in. i looked when i got home and there is a adjustment bolt on the rear "the firewall rear" is in fact all the way in. what is this and should it be all the way in?

again, this is a factory complete engine from 24 months aga. i just want to make sure that maint. is all done without getting taken by a shop....

Watch out for flying engine parts!!!

superdave 04-28-2005 12:09 AM

flying engine parts?

I don't think teflon tape would make any difference! I think it is a compression type fitting. I just looked at an oil cooler from of my 617 and while I no longer have the hoses, the cooler receiver fittings suggest compression or possibly an rubber O-ring.............someone here will surely know for sure...........How did you make out with the roof motor? ...Too old..BB

Ya, don't stand around the hood, or front of the car while it drops from 7500 rpm to 3500 rpm!

I understand shrapnel can Peirce through hood and fender sheet metal!

That adjustment bolt might be your idle adjuster. I'm not sure if its supposed to be in or out for more or less idle but I seem to remember hearing something about the idle adjuster in that location.

BusyBenz 04-28-2005 12:21 AM

Actually, I think the engine is governed at or around 5000, 5500, rpm. Idle should be normal around 750 rpm. At 350 rpm, not even sure it would run, but it might be a bit rough. Is your tach working properly?

Unfortunately, you will need to remove the hose now and see what the fittings look like. They are designed to seal on the tapered face and not on the threads. Most likely, you won't be successful in trying to stop a leak on the threads using Teflon tape or pipe sealant. These items won't accept a bath of hot oil.

roof motor

the brass nut where you put the adapter to move the motor manually was stripped. this nut engages a compression washer on the internal gear. so when you close or open the roof too far it allows the gear to slip so you dont blow the teeth off of the gear. the unit is 430.00 and another member, boneheaddoctor sold me one for a great price. it should be here in a couple of days. so i am hopefull that will do the trick.

dave

p.s. thanks again bonehead

superdave 04-28-2005 12:24 AM

again told ya stupid question.

this shows ya how long its been since i have had my head under a hood. i meant 750 and 350. now i understand the "dont stand near it" comment

ha ha dave

I just saw this thread this morning..............I will read the rest later....I have full set of paper manuals and the CD-rom manual on this car.......will check and reply after I read all of the thread.

I'll look in the manuals tonight and determine what sort of cnnection is made...IE compression or not......Mine doesn't leak and I have not had it apart to know from experience.

Could this be the rack dampner bolt?
