Mobil One Truck and SUV Synth Oil 5w-40W
 

Folks know this has been talked to death, but Mobil is claiming 15K miles on this stuff. Mobil One Truck and SUV Synth Oil 5w-40W. I know the filter needs to be changed at 5K. And that the best way is to test the oil. My question is what to test for, who to test, and how to test. Ok, that 3 questions.

FYI, Mobil 1 Truck and SUV is the same formula as Delvac 1 used in semi trucks, just in quarts instead of gallons. Its great stuff, but I would still stick to your normal change intervals. I havent seen any claims for the 15K changes on the diesel oils, only on the gassers.

To save money on oil, buy delvac 1 in larger quantities. Smallest is a box of 4 one gallon containers (around $100). Next is a 5 gallon jug. Pretty sure a 55 gallon drum is the next increment. I have yet to find Delvac 1 in single gallons. Delvac partial synthetic is common in gallons (black jug)

I usually keep a quart of Mobil 1 Truck and SUV in the trunk and buy the 4 one gallon box at a Mobil distribution center in Detroit.

But my engine has been using fully synthetic since day one, if you havent been using fully synthetic, some oil leaks may occur.

"Farm & Fleet" stores (in Wisconsin) sell Delvac 1 in one gallon containers, although I buy it by the case when I can find it (when I go to Wisconsin to visit family).

It's not the easiest oil to find, and I always stock up on it when I find it. Glad they rebranded it as "Truck & SUV" oil, as that seems to have a dramatically wider availability.

Truck stops usually have Delvac-1.

From the site below about big trucks:

"Engine oil drain intervals of 60,000 miles and beyond are typical for them. Intervals between engine overhauls are running to a million miles or more."

A friend of mine works on big trucks, he says they are changed about every 20,000 miles with dino 15w-40 (about 32 quarts each change).

Blackstone Labs does all my oil analysis testing. Googlem.

I would not consider increasing drain intervals without doing oil analysis. While the oil itself might be good for XX thousand miles, our older diesels make alot of soot, and most sources I have read say that the oil will need to be changed because of the soot concentration well before you reach the limits of the oil itself.
Somewhee, MB has a spec for the max allowable soot concentration in the oil - anyone know what it is?

YEAH BUT...don't they run with centrifugal filters and better bypass type filters than we run on our MB's?

Please note the date (upper left corner of each post) many of these folks don't even visit here anymore.

Only on a few owner-operator trucks and small fleets. They also carry 22 gallons of oil in the crankcase.
