No turbo boost '85 300D

1985 300D KKK turbo
Turbo overhauled by Majestic Turbo in December 2004. Since then, it has a whine (sounds like a siren) from 2500 RPM, disappears when letting up on the throttle. I taked to them this week, they said it sounds like an air leak. Boost pressure was around .8-.9 bar. Replaced intake, turbo mounting gaskets and both "O" rings.

The whine is still there, now there is no boost pressure. I disconnected the overboost sensor on the intake, no difference. Disconnected the air safety valve (on front of turbo, blue line) and plugged, no difference. I have measured boost pressure at both the intake and banjo line, nothing. Used WD-40 around the gaskets, fittings, turbo while idling, no change in idle speed. Turned adjustment screw CW, no difference. The only thing I can think of is the wastegate is stuck open.
Any suggestions before I call Majestic Turbo again? Alan

I had a Majestic Turbo rebuild that went bad a few months after it was put in service, the bearings developed a lot of end play. They replaced it for just the price of a new bearing, I believe it was $50 and its been fine since.

The whine could be caused by the rotor dragging on the bearings.

When cold, pull the intake and try to spin the impeller by hand. It should spin freely. If it does not spin, and you have to push it around with your fingers, then it can't develop any boost because it is turning too slowly. Pull it and send it back.

'85 300D Turbo Problems Solved!!!

Majestic Turbo insisted there was an air leak, and did not offer to look at the turbo. I could not find an air leak, called them again, "you have an air leak".

Somewhere in this forum I read about East Coast Turbo in Locust N.C.

All I can say is East Coast built me an outstanding turbo. It took a couple weeks (the KKK has odd bearings that are hard to find). The new turbo is quiet, no police siren effects, and has good boost pressure. There were a couple of installation issues, discussed very professionally over the phone. I would recommend them to anyone looking to have their turbo rebuilt.

Yes, it cost me to have this done, but life offers speed bumps from time to time. Alan

So, did the original turbo fail to spool, thereby giving you no boost?

The only change to the system was the turbo and the boost has now returned??

What is the cost to rebuild the turbo by East Coast??

Yes, what is the cost if you don't mind me asking? Mine whines excessively as well, makes occasionall funny noises and is pushing a little too much oil past the seals.

Cost was around $450 with exchange, plus a few bucks for new intake "O" rings. They can be found at www.eastcoastturbo.com 1-866-898-8726 Alan

Yes, the original turbo failed to spool, although I could not find an air leak, it could have been internal, bearings, turbines, bent shaft. As stated in the original posting, I had a terrible whine as the turbo boost increased. I can only surmise there was a leak or break internally, the bearings were not replaced at the original rebuild, air leaking past the turbo intake, lots of possibilties. Why it failed to produce any boost, any measurable boost still remains a mystery. The turbine shafts spins freely, however these turbos spin around 40,000 rpm and any play in the bearings or shaft would not be noticable while spinning by hand.

You will find they spin far faster than 40,000 rpm when you are accelerating hard..................
