I recently replaced the thermostat and have noticed a leak in that area. I believe it is the hose that is about 1 and 1/2 inch long beneath the thermostat housing. I am wondering how I get to this hose to replace it. Do I need the remove the thermostat and the engine side housing to get to the hose?

Just so I have the appropriate equipment for the replacement. What size is this piece of hose?

By-pass hose?

Sounds like you are talking about the by-pass hose. The whole housing must come off. MB sells the hose @ meter however many dealers will sell an inch or two. It's 42mm X 54mm (You need 40mm long section). I would try tightening the hose clamps first!!

Does that mean that the hose has two different openings (one 42mm and the other 54mm)which would mean that it can only be obtained from the dealer?

Tref,
I also had that same hose leaking. It is available for around $3.00 from performance products. I have been waiting for a quote on that one from parts shop. But, while waiting, I tightened the hose clamps and my leak is gone. I will replace the hose on principle at some later event, but my clamps bolts turned easily 5-6 turns. Just don't overtighten. Try using a ratchet with a screwdriver bit, otherwise it is hard to tighten without removing the turbo hose.

OK, I tried tightening the clamps and they were both tight and actually the hose looked like it was in pretty good condition. So, I started looking around and it looks like the I have a leak around the thermostat housing. Is it possible that I received the wrong thermostat or gasket when I replaced the old one? I have even used the form-a-gasket stuff to complete the seal since it was leaking after the replacement.

Tref, your thermostat should have come with the proper rubber sealing ring/gasket that goes around the thermostat. That sealing ring is what stops the coolant from leaking. It should be properly torqued not over or under. The metal thermostat housing does not "touch" to stop coolant, so gasket maker would really do nothing if used. It is possible that the rubber ring became cockeyed during installation. Did your thermostat have a directional arrow on it? The rubber gasket should have slipped around the thermostat, and should have had a protrusion on it with a hole in the middle. It is possible that you were sold a thermostat that was too tall for the housing. I bought mine at the dealer, because the two I looked at at the aftermarket store were both different, no arrow, and too tall.

Hey Patsey,

As soon as I read your last post I realized what I had done. I neglected/forgot to insert the thermostat into the groove in the gasket. I took it apart (again) and there it was. I installed it "correctly" and used an abundant amout of Permatex to seal it.

Someone else told me that the 116's have a tendency to pit and then leak, so thus the Permatex.

Thanks Again.

I should be getting the 83 240D back from my daughters soon (we reate them and I work on the one I have) and I can work on the temp gauge again. It looks to me like all of the gauges run the the glow plug relay and therefore if some are working all should be working. It must either be in the circuit, the circuit board or the gauge itself.

Permatex is wonderfull stuff, except when it gets into the tiny passages in the climate control system. I hope it's not an older one with a servo. If it's a newer one with a monovalve, check the strainer screen on it from time to time.

I think this was the last year for the servo. I tried to be careful about not globing it up on the inside and only applying it to the seal. At least I realized that was a concern. Is there anything to check on the servo setup?
