i can not get the strut off my 83 300td seriously
i have the wierd brass flat saucer brace thing on the top of the hydropneumatic strut with the equally flat brass screw thing in the middle of it all this on top of a rubber bushing kind of washer thing ... screw in the middle takes an alan wrench but when i try it...it really seems wrong like im definetely gonna strip that screw .i manage to seem to turn the whole strut assembly but the screw doesnt give...anyone know the trick to this setup?? its kind of an emergency !

Drill + bit.
I drilled the heads off the bolts. Putting a new strut in anyway, right?

I haven't done a lot of strut work but it seems like a whiz wheel and air hammer are necessary tools in most of these jobs. The parts have a nasty habit to rust and fuse together. I have not yet done one of those jobs on a mercedes but I helped my friend on his old crx one time and he was going to wait for his neighbor so he could get the air hammer!
Good Luck. Drilling will work since you most likely want to replace all the bolts, washers, strut, etc. As long as you don't damage the attach points you are cool! |
