Actually... more like $25. I found www.odometergears.com sells them for $25 each or $65 for a set of the three that fail.
The $135 flat rate NH guaranteed repair is not bad except that I have two 126 speedos needing the same gears. I'm sure its a common failure. Simple fix if we could get the parts. |

These are from my bookmarks. Other than a pleasant phone chat with the fellow at speedometer.com, I have no personal experience with any of these folks.

The cost of those gears is a rip but I am sure with a small as quantities as they are they have a high cost to manufacture. Unfortunately the 25 sounds about right. That is job I need to do as well on my 85 300SD but I estimate my mileage based on my commute length!

I have used odometergears.com and was very satisfied. The guy who runs the business is some kind of chemist or researcher at NASA Langely who makes these as a side business out of his home. It turns out that about a year ago when I called him, I found that I worked about about a mile from his home so, I went to pick up the gears personally for my 84 300SD. They worked perfectly. He showed me the whole operation. He is a perfectionist. He mixes various chemicals, pours them into molds and presto...a new gear. Unless the gear is perfect he discards it. He had quite a few discards. I took the gears home, popped them into the odometer housing, tightened a few screws, plugged in a few connectors and pushed the unit back in. It is still working perfectly a year later. For fifty dollars and about 30 minutes labor, it was a great alternative to sending the unit away.

Gee Whiz guys... I think you need to go to the next more basic step... a gear seller.... those gears are probably stock from some other places shelf...
I think I have a catalog from some place like " Smallparts.com"... but will check on that name... $25 for a little gear like that is just too much.... |

Have you actually seen broken gears in your speedometer? I have fixed a few of these now and haven't replaced a gear yet.

I doubt these gears cost more then a fraction of a cent to make. I tryed finding them when I wanted to fix my 240 Volvo Speedometer but no luck. None of the repair shops around here (s.florida) would sell them or divulge their source. IPDUSA.Com which sells Volvo parts sells the repair kit with the gears for a 240 for $49.95 |

And yes my odometer gear was definitely broken. I sucked it up and paid the $25. If I had to search for a cheaper price I think it would still be broken. $25 may be a lot but it beats $150+ for a rebuilt instrument cluster. Also just a reminder, NEVER TURN THE SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE BY HAND. You will ruin it. Danny

So I am cheap.....
You know, Ridge has a site with the subtitle of " reproduce thousands" or something to that effect... I think using silicone for mold making...
Maybe someone ought to get a good gear out and make a mold of it using Ben's instructions.... Or someone with a mill could hob a tube and then cut out multiples of the gear... |

With parts such as these odometer gears it really isn't realistic to look solely at manfacturing cost. Yes, it might have been when the cars containing them were still in production, but that was then and this is now.
Put yourself in the position of anyone who goes to the trouble of making these gears now. How big a market is there? How do you reach all the people that need the gears? What is a reasonable number to mfr in a batch? How long will you have to inventory them before they sell? What about shipping? What about credit risk? Costs money to take a credit card for the purchase. ...on and on and on... The more I think about it, $25 isn't too bad a price, all things considered. just my $.02, Wes |
