Got My 1985 300D all fixed up
I posted here a few weeks back when I purchased this car
see this thread http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/120918-1985-300d-purchase.html?highlight=300d+purchase The car had been sitting for quite a while before I bought it. Anyway after taking it in to Atwood European, a shop recomended here by DavidL. The car is running Great! Things I had done: repalced engine mounts, transmission mount, all belts, drive propeller shaft, flex disc, center support drive shaft bearing, valve cover gasket, diesel return lines, all filters, fuel return line, fuel hose, fixed the trunk lock, remounted the ac compressor (which was on crooked) the first guy I had look at it said the compressor was shot but now the ac works fine. He even charged it with freeon at no cost. And to top it off they washed and vacumed it out. Great shop and Andrew (owner) is great to do buisness with. He said that the car is in really good condition with a strong motor and if I ever want to sell let him know. So I now have roughly $2000 in it including purchase price and it seems to be in great shape. Man it sure feels good on the freeway. I think I'm going to need to take a road trip real soon! You have a fantastic deal there for $2K.
I would change the transmission, power steering, and rear axle fluids as well, prior to calling it "ready to go". Additionally, if it has been sitting for awhile, it probably has the green stuff in the radiator, so, it would be a good idea to change that to G-05 as well. |

Where are you or where is that shop? Sounds like a place worth referring people to. I guess you lucked out on that A/C. I spent nearly $1000 to get mine completely up dated (incl. new hoses and compressor) but its still R12 (Do not consider R134A if anyone tries to sell you on that!) $2000 is not a lot of money for one these fine cars, the 123's have a great balance between reliability and luxury and still something you can work on if you so desire. |
Addendum - I have been helping my niece look at cars recently, we have seen a few lately including some I'd just like to have not spent any time on, like a 190E (POS) a Toyota that had been pimped up with flashy wheels and thumper stereo (better to make a young man feel his oats), and a '93 Honda Accord, the nicer of the lot. Still, driving the Accord left me wishing I was back behind the wheel of my '83 300D. The Benz is solid by comparison, it feels MUCH safer and it sits a little higher above the pavement. Also has the aimer device on the hood (Tri-star). Takes the curves a little slower but whats the hurry anyhow?
If I were forced to commute in a Honda I'd certainly take out additional life insurance. Now I know why I see so many rosaries (out here it's also Chinese religious thingies with a small piece of fake Jade) hanging from rearview mirrors on little ricers. |
I think you should sell it quick to me before you have to put anymore money into it!!!!
These cars are known to last only 250,000 miles without any thing being done to them and if you sell it to me now you will cut your losses. :D :rolleyes2 |
The shop is
Atwood European 4825 N 7th Street Phx Az 85014 602-287-9666 I will double check the other fluids. He may have changed some of them as well. I have a quesiton about key blanks. I see on ebay where someone is selling mercedes key blanks for this year car. $7 including shipping for two I think. Is this a good thing to get or is it just as cheap to get new keys cut at a hardware store? Thanks Kevinlee |
wow that's awesome...i bought mine a few months ago and i'm working on it a little bit at a time with my dad. sounds like a good deal you got there, too. keep us posted.
