How much longer until we hit the "Big Time"...

I am suffering thru my 85 300D dash fire, engine swap and now a frozen Automatic only because I know there will be a Day when the car is Historic and will be something people admire. Its 1985 now. How many years until we are Historic?

I think you can get "QQ" new jersey historic plates (and insurance!!) at 22 or 25 years old.

Its 25 years old in Virginia.....it may vary from state to state.

The problem with getting antique plates in Virginia is that you are limited in how much you are allowed to use the car. As I recall, you can't go more than 250 miles from your home and you can't drive the car every day. They want antique car plates used only for true Sunday drivers, parades, etc. Kind of defeats the purpose of having a 617 motor if you can't keep driving it.

True but I see some real heaps with antigue tags on them.........

Besides....if they ever ask I am on my way to the shop with it.....

Anyway my W116 isn't a 12 month driver in the interest of keeping it rust free as long as I can.

250 miles gets you into ohio from the DC area..........

Maryland states that you can only use those tags for going to and from an event. The big reason to get them is that the car doesn't have to pass the onerous MD inspection. Otherwise, it's just an added expense.

In Texas the only requirements are:

1. 25 years and a carrying rate of one ton or less.

2. If you already have plates for it, they have to be examined at your county tax office and the plates have to be the same year as the model of the classic vehicle, the same color, as well as being in good condition.

3. If you havent registered the car in Texas in the last five years you must provide proof of ownership.

If you are looking to get classic plates for Texas you can download the .pdf application for them here.

For the older ones you can run tags the year of the car...but I believe it was the mid 70's that they got cheap (all that pricey prison labor you know) abd started using decals for experation.....

My brother runs 1957 plates on his '57 chevy....
