I need some advice. I have a 1969 220d that has a bad engine. The engine has severe blow-by. Oil leaks in several places including the head gasket area, valve cover area, oil dipstick tube and even the air cleaner assembly was full of oil. My question; Will a 5 cyl diesel engine(non-turbo) fit into this car? If so, will it bolt up to the 4sp manual trans? I ask this because I can get hold of a 5cyl diesel engine(from a 77 300d) that runs great for next to nothing. Or Would I be better of trying to find a good running 220 engine? Also, I'm on a very tight budget. I would appreciate any experience or advice. thank you.

I don't know if the 4spd from '69 trans will bolt on to the 300d engine. If it does bolt on, you would have to shorten the driveshaft because the 300D engine is around 6" longer than that of the 220D. You would also have to modify the shift rods. You are probably better off trying to find another 220D engine. Maybe a 240D engine would fit without modification? Good luck.

The engines(240 or 300D) from the 1977 + later cars won't fit! Many 1974-76 240D diesels out there & that will fit.

After thinking about it all day, I believe I'll just try to find another 220d engine. Plus the one I have has a brand new injection pump. Any idea how much an engine should cost? thanks for you help. andy

It ought to be really cheap, but...

In the catalog that I have, they run about 3 grand, plus a $600 core charge. (cheaper than a 300 turbo, if that helps ease the pain)
