Does disabling the EGR really lower the amount of gunk in the cross-over?
Today I had to remove the cross-over pipe on my SDL to finally put the metal piece in that holds the injector lines, well anyway, my cross-ver seems to have had more gunk in it now than 11k miles ago when I had it off and cleaned to replace the glow plugs? Since then that EGR has been disconnected. The amount wasn't really significant but enough that if you touched it with your finger it would gunk up. I did this with the engine hot so maybe that's why it was oily rather than dry carbon. just looking for your input as usual.
Thanks David

Yes.
But you may have a turbo seal leaking or blow by.
Both will spray sludge into the intake.

I don't think it's blow-by as this engine comsumes no oil. It leaked a quart to 6500 miles. My rear main leaves a nasty little puddle wherever it's parked. I wonder if it maybe is the turbo seal as you said. Is there any other way to tell or fix it or is this one of those things that the cost wouldn't make it worth it?
Thanks David

Found your car data.
1987 300SDL 247k miles (mine) "Panzer"
Do you have a TRAP on your car??? If the TRAP goes bad = turbo seals then turbo bearings toast + massive sludge in the intake manifold. It is not legal to do this: Some people have been known to remove the TRAP, empty it and reinstall it = better MPG and power

I "had" to replace my manifolds but "couldn't" find the same year. The manifolds I "replaced" them with some that didn't have any way to mount the trap so I "unfortunately" had to eliminate it. Strange thing now, the car has more power, gets better fuel economy and even tested cleaner at the inspection station. Oh yeah, I "accidently" forgot to put the EGR back on. It some how mysteriously jumped into my garbage can and disappeared there. I couldn't "find" another one so I had to cover the openings with some specially made plates. I pulled one off to see how clean the manifold was on the inside and there wasn't any gunk after 10K+ miles of driving it that way. Must be running cleaner for sure.

My car had the trap removed in '97.
Thanks David

After blocking my egr I only get a very light coating of oil in the intake and crossover.
Did you block the egr with a plate or just pull off the vac line? It might be possible that the valve is leaking. I would check that out before rebuilding the turbo.
