Almost Ready!

Just finished painting the newly installed core support and getting ready to install the radiator/oil cooler, condensor and auxilliary fan.

The force of the impact tore the screws out of the front crossmember where the auxilliary fan mounted. I used some of the blue, plastic wall anchors to repair the damaged holes.

I'll post some updated photos soon...Robert

Here are some photos of the nearly finished collision repair. The new core support was welded in place and refinished in the correct Acorn Yellow. The old, damaged hood is still in place in this photo. So much time has passed since my son's April 21, 2006 accident, but the car still starts instanly and runs great. It has been very difficult just to find the time to do the work.

More to come...

Looks beautiful, Robert. I made the mistake of letting my 300SD hibernate and now the wife's 300D is sick (bad starter) and now she can't drive either. I need to get mine back on the road soon.

I wish you would hang out here more often, we miss your technical inputs.

Rick

Thanks, Rick...

We have been so busy of late with the new house, new baby, my schooling and promotion that I just don't have a lot of time to play.

I am always available via e-mail though...:-)

Just did the IP upgrade and installed a new 'gold' rack damper capsule. This made a huge improvement in overall idle quality. My early 617.950 did not have this feature...Robert

Anyone care to comment on their results of using a 2.47:1 or 2.88:1 axle ratio behind a 617??? I drive 110 miles a day (round trip) to work and think this reduction in cruise rpm might get me past my current 27 mpg barrier. Thoughts???...Robert

Back On The Road After 3 Years:

Good morning,

I drove the 116 the 54 miles (one-way) to work this morning for the first time since my son's April 21, 2006 accident. Aside from a few minor issues, the car is running very, very well. I pulled the 4-bolt cover off the bottom of the steering gear over the weekend and installed new seals to repair a minor leak and reselaed the power steering pump for good measure. Of course I installed all new Continental belts and hoses along with a new Wahler thermostat.

I changed the fuel filters, topped up the tank and added 1.0 ounce of Bio Clean to the fuel and a small bottle of two-stroke pre-mix. The pre-mix is a blue-green color and it was just enough to tint the fuel, but the engine certainly seems to idle much quieter with it in the fuel, as I could hear the idle change was I saw the green pre-mix enter the clear primary fuel filter.

I also noticed a slight drip from the throttle valve shaft on the transmission which needed attention. Once the linkage was removed, I pulled the 'C' clip which retains a wave washer over a flat nylon washer. As many of you know from experience, this shaft is sealed internally with an 'O' ring, which is not serviceable from the outside. However, there is a fairly deep countersink here, so I came up with a quick solution.

I found an 'O' ring in my kit that would stretch over the shaft and fit within this countersunk area. I then placed the nylon washer over the shaft, which required some pressure to install the wave washer and the 'C' clip. Once installed, the valve lever was tested for freedom of movement and re-assembled. Thus far, I have no leak from this area.

It was 112° yesterday in the garage and I let the car idle for 30 minutes, but it never got warm enough to turn the auxilliary fan on. In stock form, with the 5 blade aluminum fan, the car would creep up to 200°F if allowed to idle for long periods of time, but with the plastic 9 blade fan, It never goes over 175°F to 180°F anymore.

Just wanted to give you all a quick update and a before and after photo. I hope all of you are doing well...Robert

Good to hear that it's back on the road. The world needs all the W116 it can get

Question: Can you tell me about the 9 blade plastic fan? What model is it off of and does it bolt directly on to the fan clutch?

Thanks

Ether,

The 9 blade plastic fan is mounted to a clutch. I pulled it off a later-model 617 at my local Pik-N-Pull...Robert

That is a beautiful car and a great job you did bringing her back. I have been following along as you have progressed.

I don`t have a W116, but one of these days. they are a very elegant design.
