Anyone Know How Common A Stickshift 240d Is?

hi, i got one for ya.
i have an 81 240d with a 4 speed manual. and of all the ones ive seen or heard of, they are all automatics. is a standard shift something common or am i gonna play hell when it comes time for a clutch?

(guess i wont complain, the odometer broke two years ago at 582,360miles =) gotta be halfway to 700 by now, i drive nearly 100 miles a day 6 days with it.

The stickshift 240's aren't too uncommon, in my general "looking" I've seen to come across one every 4th car or so when checking on ebay and other car listings and ones I see around here. The parts aren't hard to come by, can order them pretty easily online and essentially all of them are available still. I saw two stickshift 240's on ebay a couple weeks ago even, so there's a number of them out there.

almost 700k...wow!!

Thanks pawo, i saw the various forums on the frontpage of the shopforum section and just decided to ask all the questions i ever wondered about these things lol.

yeah i know, its alot of miles, and dont get me wrong it shows its years in a few ways, rust, bent rear axle, slightly wrinkled front fender& headlight assembly, but believe it or not it has all the original paperwork with it including the window sticker. retailed for nearly 22k. it musta got around alot since its hayday because it shows as being dropped at the docks at baltimore, shipped to the first owner in chicago and when i got it, it has a carlot badge on the bumper from north carolina.

"am i gonna play hell when it comes time for a clutch?"

Doing a clutch job is a piece of cake on these cars.

These cars are as common as dirt on the face of the earth. I've owned three of them. When it comes clutch time, just click on Fastlane above and Phil will fix you up from parts on his shelf.

Good luck,

Speaking of 240D's, Larry, when are you getting your euro back on the road? I think I've been asking you about it for 3 years now!

turbodiesel,

Thanks for your interest in ol' silver.

To answer your question, as time goes by I am losing my enthusiasm for restoring the car. If the body were straighter, I might be more enthused. Once my son started parking it on the high school parking lot it got a little rash here and there.

On top of all that, my situation has drastically changed in the last couple of years. I work at home, no longer driving 89 miles one way to the office. I drive to town a few times a week on the average. Also, my daughter just got out of Junior College and moved out a week ago to go to the University. My wife leaves on Sunday and works in the DFW area and stays with her sister during the week, so I am now by myself.

With me being by myself, my interests have changed and I'm starting up my second childhood taking up a time consuming, and some say dangerous, hobby that I have not pursued since I was nineteen. This change in interest is probably more responsible for my waning car interest than anything.

So now I'm down to the 300E which I love driving, my Vette and my pickup for when I need a pickup as far as cars on the road go.

My thinking has even gone so far as to think about selling the Euro 240D and the Euro 240D parts car.

Maybe something will happen to fire me up again regarding the restoration.

Thanks again for your interest,

stick

dont know for a fact but i think that you would find that the sticks are more common than autos. i am guessing anywhere from 2-1 to 4-1. personally the stick is the only way to go with a 240. (not knocking you auto lovers out there just stating my preference).

Jim,

I hesitated to name the hobby for several reasons. Mostly because I would be shocked if there is anyone here that would understand what motivates someone to enter such an activity, especially at my age.

If you REALLY want to know, PM me and I will tell you.

Have a great day,
