In what way is subframe bushing R&R easier with the springs removed? I may just go ahead and replace them along with the springs. They'll need to be replaced within the next year or two anyway.

The springs are trying to force the lower control arm downward off the body. The arm stops on the subframe. When you loosen the subframe mount bolts, the force of the spring will try and force the subframe down. Then, when you try and put the bolts back in, the subframe needs to be forced up against the load of the spring. Several members have resorted to jacking the bolt upward to get the first thread started.

I had no need to do this. I simply lifted the subframe up and started the bolt with relative ease.

If you have the spring compressor, it only takes about 15 minutes to pull the spring. You do have to remove the shock first, however.

Sounds fun! I think I'll order subframe bushings along with the springs and a starter (hot start issue returned with a vengeance...and it hit 93 degrees today, and it's only May ).

The tool your supposed to use is the Klann spring compressor.

Well the Snap-on spring compressor didn't work. it looked like it was sturdy enough but the Housing with the hooks didn't fit through the spring hole. I wound up supporting the control arm on a jackstand to replace the ball joints.
They weren't hard at all to get out. A 1" socket and a 5lb sledge hammer. Took each one out with about 5 blows.
The AutoZone ball joint press did work but there is no way to use it like it's supposed to be used with the adapters. The top of the press actually pushes on the ball not the housing.
I can't see it causing any real damage though. If that was the case we would be replacing ball joints every time we hit a pothole!
They were a ***** to get out though. 5lb sledge again and a pickle fork. Really had to hit that sucker hard!

All in all it worked out pretty good.

Danny
