Electrocharger

Everyone wake up. Did a search on this forum and nothing came up. Anyone with a 240D will be happy about this one, but you might have to wait for availability. But it may make all of us happy. Here's the link.

Electrocharger

For those too lazy to click on link, this product basically replaces your alternator. On acceleration it turns into a motor, giving the engine a little more help. Then when you are cuising or braking, it turns into an alternator that charges the battery back up.

Also it allows you to take a tax deduction.

I still can't believe no one else ran into this first.

So basically, you're building your own Honda IMA hybrid system?

AWESOME! Time to find a 190D 2.2

cool, since I have to ask how much it will cost ($ TBA) I obviously can't afford it.

Good idea, but I'm not going to rush out and get one. First of all, the engineering involved is pretty complex and I would worry about longevity. Second, how much money is TBA?? That baby has got to be expensive.

It looks like you'd have to somehow convert or adapt the belt pulley to have the one that the "Electrocharger" requires, that thick "toothed" belt, so it can apply the real torque....

Two significant issues:

1) As BHD has noted, the horespower that this unit can add would probably be minimal. If it could truly add 15 hp, I'd be amazed. Now for a 240D, that might be just the ticket, but for anything that currently has more than 100 hp on tap, the additional power would hardly be noticeable.

2) The issues with regenerative braking are significant. The motor/generator must be coupled to the brake system and be modulated via hydraulic pressure. It's not insurmountable, but, would probably entail quite a bit of cost.

Whatever it costs it's not worth it. At most you could get an extra 2 or 3 horsepower.

You could get as much performance boost by making sure your engine is tuned up and running properly, and that your tires are aligned and inflated to factory specs.

I realized that, I was being sort of tongue-in-cheek. TBA probably means the maximum amount we can charge and still have suckers buy it.

That thing won't work on a 617...it sez it's for "4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines."

Maybe only a couple of HP but electric motors have GOBS of torque and this thing would seems to be intended to kick in exactly when you need it: right at start up!!!

Well, nobody in their right mind would buy an engine with five cylinders.

Unfortunatly I can see the threads already. Like what am I to do with my runaway electrocharger dragging my 240d all over the place? Should I carry a set of bolt cutters to disconect cables in emergencys? What is 2-3 horespower to a 240d? Everything. No paranoia guys, in your lifetime the five cylinder will be recognized as an engine type as well I think. On a more serious note was really impressed with the group meeting. Will try to go myself hopefully next time as it is about the only way to meet some of the forum members in person for me.
