Choosing a model
I'm interested in purchasing a mercedes diesel and am wondering if anyone can give me some advice on what to look for (and look out for) in a used mercedes.
I am considering 300D and 140D models, as well as the wagon, somewhere between 1983 and 1989. 1. What is the best engine in terms of reliability and repair costs? 2. Are there any chassis related issues to consider? 3. How do I judge mileage in a diesel engine? (what is considered high mileage?) 4. Is there anything in particular that I should be avoiding or watching out for? Thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to being a diesel owner soon! |

It doesn't pay to be too dogmatic. There are certain models like the 350 from the late 80s-early 90s that are said to have issues. But be a little flexible. I would much rather buy a car in good condition, that is well maintained, than the most desirable model in lesser condition.
Mercedes diesels will go on for 200,000 300,000 miles or more. 500,000 is not unheard of. But the key is that the car be well maintained and operated correctly. If the owner is a slob who doesn't know how to operate the car, and never changes the oil or has the car serviced it could be due for major repairs in 50,000 to 80,000 miles of use. So the key is to talk to the owner, look at how he has kept the car, and ask to see the service records. If the car is clean and well maintained, the owner is a diesel fan and knows what's what, and the car has been regularly serviced and repaired by a Mercedes dealer or good independent mechanic, buy it. |

I would also reccomend driving any of the possible models that you are considering to see if you could live with the coupe, sedan, wagon as your needs may change in the future. If you need any sort of freeway passing ability or live in a hilly area. I wouldn't reccomend a 240D.
When it comes to buying time, it wouldn't hurt to have a Pre Purchase Inspection (PPI) done on the car to make sure everything is sound. |

things to look for
i concur with the above posts. i have owned over 30 mercedes most of them diesels. i like the 123 bodied cars. the best year i have found is 83 and 84. best rustproofing no major mechanical issues. the ac tends to be a little weak in those years so look for one in perfect operating condition. the only thing i will say strongly is dont pay extra for any car that is presented as very low mileage... unless very strong irrefutable proof is shown of the actual mileage, in the form of very complete records with authentic looking mileages that can be tied together. actual low mileage diesels that old are EXTREMELY rare. people generally buy diesels because they drive a lot. and they tend to keep them ten or fifteen years or more.
good luck. mb diesels are the best.
