Time to Say Good-Bye to Worn Out 1982 240D

Some of you may recall a few stories about this car over the last several years. Well, after 322,485 miles and many, many years and adventures, the time has come to say good-bye. Its last assignment, serving my soon to be 20 year old son, was more than the old machine could handle. He used the car to tow jet skis all over the Northeast, and ran it through two Winters in Troy, NY. It never really died, but it runs horribly, and consumes massive amounts of oil.

I am offering the car to anyone who will come and take it in one chunk, for nothing. I do not have the space and time to use it for parts (I will regret that one day, I know).

Anyway, the car has been slightly cannibalized - the rear bumber with the trailer hitch mechanism has been transplanted to the 1983 240D, as its rear bumper suffered from too much Aluminum galvanic corrosion at the mechanical connections to the bumper shock/mount, and the HVAC fan for the interior was robbed to serve in my father-in-law's 1980 240D. Other than that, and the generally very used condition of the driver's seat (it is a disaster, actually), the interior is not too bad. It comes complete with a reasonably new shift lever cover (not, my son just took it off, but if that stops someone, I could always put it back), all the interior panels in Palomino (passenger seat cushion is some mutant color from exposure to sun, but not ripped or broken down) MB-Tex. Carpets are there, not too bad. Rear seat is fine, no rips or tears.

The exterior is pretty beat. The paint is somewhat faded, there is rust at the corners of the doors, fenders, and around the jack points (but they seem whole as I just got under the car to check this stuff out). The shocks are Bilsteins HD, with less than 100,000 miles on them. Manual transmission works fine, same with the clutch. Wheels are the alloy Bundt cake things in rough shape, with Michelin tires (195/70-14) that are maybe 20% or so left. Radio is some replacement Alpine or other thing my daughter put in . She may take it out, but I doubt it. Oh yeah, it has functioning Euro headlights, with one of the "fog" light lenses cracked.

If anyone is interested, PM me. I am not going to harvest anything off the car, I will give it away whole to anyone who comes and fetches it. Otherwise, it goes to the car boneyard nearby. Jim

I have been running between Pittsburgh, Houston, Milwaukee and home like a madman for the last 6 months, building a new high speed, permanent magnet motor. The machine is rated at 10 MW, runs at 6,200 rpm, has 8 poles and uses 400Hz juice at 4160 Volts. We will get back into a longer term test program in early July, and the travel will get unbearable again.

Once it runs, it runs ok, uses a lot of oil and is hard to start with the starter. It pop starts fine. If you want I will give it a shot and report back. When it was put in its present temporary resting spot, it was driven there after being driven home from Troy, NY around Christmas time. I think that was the last time we had it running. The battery is a few years old, Sears Die Hard enormous Diesel unit. Jim

Why not just yank the engine out, have the head gasket replaced, adjust the valves and convert it into one of the best gensets around ?
Or if you really want to get fancy, yank the engine as above and have a custom motorcycle builder turn it into a three wheeler ? They do that with the VW Beetles, why not a Benz ? And then run it on B100 biodiesel :-)
Just some brain food.
