I need a louder horn!

....to alert all the drivers out there making love to their cell phones or simply not looking before they pull out. Another near miss on my short commute this morning. My kids school bus was hit yesterday leaving school. 40' x 10' yellow billboard and an officer directing traffic - both were hit.

Stop rant. I want to replace my stock horns with something louder, preferably a lower tone too. I don't want to add an air compressor or anything, but want something louder that penetrates SUV shaped coccoons. Who out there has done this, what have you used, sources? Thanks!

Air horns.............so why not a compressor? 12-V electric horns are about as loud as they can make them, so the next step up would be air horns. Look up on the internet under air horn and see how involved a hook up might be. It may be easier than you think!

Sometimes I would rather have a CB with a PA and a speaker under the hood.

Sometimes being able to say - "HANG UP AND DRIVE" would be sooooooo much more satisfying and effective than a HONKKKKK

I would love one of the air horns some big rigs have....man you could make someone absorbed in their cell phone call and driving soil their shorts.

Check out the Hella catalog, they have some real good electric horns, there is a particular model for trucks which has a long throw patten, perfect for blasting irresponsible drivers in advance.

Maybe some nice long chrome ones on the roof!

I have been looking at some Hella horns that should do the job at close to 130dB! JCWhitney carries a pretty good selection.

I got a dual tone horn set with an electric air compressor on my 280Z. It sounds like the shrill european horn, VERY piercing, I may put another set on my 240D.

My wife hit some road debris and broke the horn in her car. When I looked into replacing it I saw an air horn kit for not much more money. It came with a pair of bugles, a small compressor and tubing and I added a relay to handle the power. They weren't as big or loud as big truck horns but still very loud. I looked forward to driving her car and finding an occasion to use them. The only problem was they only lived a couple of years. I think I saw them at Pep Boys.

I figure one that sounds like its on a Kenworth and is loud enought to hear in the next state is just about right to get them to focus on driving and not yacking.

The '58 220s I had was equipped with dual beep-beep

horns that would make you mess your britchs if you were close when I hit the button. My 300SD has duals and is quite loud but a different tone/not nearly as loud as the '58. I tweaked the horns on the '72 which made them sound better/louder.

Yesterday I was waiting in the left hand turn lane for an arrow at a busy light.... as usual cars blast through in the cross traffic after the yellow and into the green arrow for me. .. I hestitated and was glad I did .. here came a guy on a vespa making a left turn while it's my turn... wearing no helmut and talking on a cell phone.
That is a first for me .. never seen that one before.

I honked lonog and loud and expected the "bird"... but he had no hands left to flip me off with.

I'd also like a louder horn....I just can't afford one...

Jay Leno mentioned that a while back on the Tonight Show....he said he saw someone on a harley on their cell phone, and he couldn't believe it.

Hella air horns are known to fail pretty quickly. Luckily they have a nice warrenty program. The hella 'supertones' which are magnetic with red metal grilles over them are quite good, from what i hear (yuk yuk)

You can see a pair of supertones on the bumper of this Porsche 959 rally car. They are just inboard of the driver side headlamp.
