Cross country drive soon in a '92 2.5

I am looking at purchasing a fellow forum member's '92 2.5.

Here's the car:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=197382

I have a PPI set up for Monday morning at Eurotech near Orlando. If all goes well with the PPI, I will fly to Orlando and drive the car back to California early next week.

Any specific things I should inform the shop to look for considering I will be travelling 2000+ miles back to California?

Any specific things I should bring for the trip. Extra fuel filters, etc.

I have ZERO experience with 124's, but all I've read about these 2.5 turbos have been very positive. No better way to get to know the car then by driving 36 hours, eh?

Oil and filter change for sure.

Transmission fluid and filter might be good too.

Differential oil level if you wanted to nit pick.

Sounds like a good car for the $$$ and a forthcoming seller also.

As it is diesel, getting new filters sounds good as was said.

Might not hurt to carry a set of belts and hoses or at least check the condition of those on the car. And mae sure the jack, jack handle are in place and the spare has air.

And that the Airconditioning works, you will need it.

I would personally attempt to meet a couple of forum members along the way, if it were me. There are lots of good people there, and a mid way inspection would be helpful, and reassuring I am sure - and I am sure people would help you out with one ---- nice crew on here.

I just clicked on the other thread link. That is a reasonable price for the car - hope you got a good one.

My brother has a 92 2.5 and it is a very nice car with good fuel mileage. I never considered the possibility that water could be forced into that side intake, but that sort of thing happens a lot around standing water. There should be one or more drain holes somewhere in the air cleaner container and you wouldn't want them to be blocked. I'll mention this to my brother when I get the chance.

Good Luck on the drive,

Ken300D

Thanks all. I'll keep you posted on the results of the PPI.

Also, when plans have been finalized, I'll post my plan of travel and maybe I can meet one or two of you guys on the way.

Thanks again.

Randy

There is a drain with a short hose in the bottom of the airbox. It's a pretty big pipe so it probably is hard to clog...mine is wide open, and it hasn't been cleaned in 109k miles. Even with the drain clogged, I don't think the engine could suck water up the intake because it would fill up the bottom of the airbox and start overflowing out the louvers on the fender. The engine sucks air from the highest point of the airbox which is higher than the intake on the fender. Out of the airbox, a rubber flex pipe makes the 90 degree bend through the second firewall down to the turbo.

Well...I didn't get the car. The mechanic said the car looked like it was in excellent condition, but there was a problem/short with an airbag sensor. The part was $1800..yikes! The mechanic said the airbag could be bypassed, but this would of course leave it inoperable and the airbag light would be on constantly. If it was just me, and I didn't have to worry about my son, and I wasn't clear across the country I would have went ahead with the purchase. Unfortunately, however, I do have these other things working against me, and I was also running out of time to find a car. I reluctantly purchased a 1997 Nissan Maxima just yesterday after looking at a lot of sub-par w124's out here. Once I get back on my feet financially after my recent divorce, I will be back on the lookout for a nice w124. This is the only reason the car wasn't purchased, and anyone in the area should really consider the vehicle. I know if the moons were aligned a little better I would be driving it right now.
