oil leak / 300 turbo diesel

I saw a thread somewhere about a person having an oil leak on the back side of the head in the location where the oil feed line attaches to the head for the turbo. Has anybody had this problem and fixed it ,it is so close to the firewall I cant see, I have tried to use a mirror after cleaning with no luck it almost looks like it might be the line itself where it bolts to the head. Are there any plugs on the back side of head that could be leaking , or could the head be leaking? The engine has 300,000 miles on it and runs great.

3 of mine, the 82 CD, the 83 CD and the 84 TD all leak oil from the head at the back. Mileage varies on the cars, but its not an uncommon leak for this engine.

When I pulled the engine from the TD to put in the 83, I decided to pull the head and replace the gasket as well.

Is it possible to just re-tork the head bolts and would it help the leak.

Turbo oil line

That line back there is steel, at least it is on my '84 300CD. Yes, I thought the clamp had ate through the line from all the vibration. The end result was that the line was fine & the leak was from the head gasket. In my case it was easy to get to. I pulled the engine for a restoration. Sorry. Paul.

Does anybody no if it is safe to re-tork the head bolts with the possibility that it might slow down or stop the leak if so what would you do. Would you re tork from the present position or losen them all and start from there?

My gut feeling is it will probably do no good at stopping the seepage. On the otherhand checking to make sure that head bolts are at proper tension in proper sequence should not hurt anything either as long as they are not stretch type bolts. Beg, borrow, or rent a good click type torque wrench. I would not back the head bolts off. On accesable areas I on occasion used to clean down area with laquer thinner and do an external coat silicone seal as it was only the base pressure in engine driving the oil out from the oil return passage past the tired gasket on volkswagen diesels I owned.

Thanks for the info I have a good tork wrench , I dont believe there the strech type bolts but I will check my manual to make sure. What I dont understand is why oil streams out but I dont have a compression leak there.
