miles

really mileage is almost irrelevant. these units are so tough you would have to work at it to wear one out or hurt it. for a diff i would consider anything under 200,000 lo miles.

I helped a friend to replace rear end to 300D 1976. It claimed to have about 200K Miles. When we drained the box there was about 100CC worth of oil (about 4 ounces) when we opened it it had so much metal grinded pieces it wasn't even funny. The crest of the different teeth was smooth almost to a round shape. I might be able to get a picture if he didn't throw it away.

That's certainly not a consequence of mileage, someone let the fluid out. Any diff will eat itself if run low on fluid.

I agree with this statement, yet I have no idea how people maintain their car. So getting a part without knowing where it came from could be risky, unless you check the internals yourself.
