I am afraid that the transmission in my 1983 300SD is a little sick. It slips, especially when it is cold, and it has been cold lately here in North Texas. Can anyone recommend a good and honest transmission shop in the Dallas - North Texas area?

My suggestion is, take it to one of the MB dealers in Dallas. I suggest this because, a MB tranny is a unique animal. Most neighborhood shops have little or no experience working on these.
I speak from experience on this. You'll find the prices won't be much different and MB will stand behind their work. In my case, it turned out to be cheaper to take it to the local dealer because they re-sealed the tranny. No one else would consider this, they all wanted to rebuild or replace. It is fine now and I have a 1 year warranry on the parts used. BTW, have you checked the fluid level properly?

I have to agree about taking it to a Dealer. I had my wife's transmission go out in the early nineties and we took it to a transmission shop in Plano. The transmission turned out okay, but the beat up her fenders. She wasn't happy. Actually, I think we were just lucky. As far as dealers in the Dallas area go. I would not recommend the one on Plano Parkway. I would recommend Park Place Mid Cities which is West of DFW Airport on 183, take the Industrial Boulevard exit. It's in Bedford. Best of luck, |

If you are going to a MB dealer, bring about $3000+ with you. I got a rebuilt transmission from a shop in NJ that specializes in rebuilding MB and BMW auto transmissions with torque converter for $1200. I put it in myself which was a simple job and saved $2000+ for a few hours of work.
That was about 3 years and the Transmission works perfectly. It is actually better than the original because they updated it to the latest level. It has different shifting characteristics that are much better. For the above reasons, you might me better off getting a complete rebuilt rather than just fixing the one you have. If you are interested, I will try to find the address. They moved since I did business with them. I think I saw their ad in Hemming's which I don't get any more. The name is Clark transmissions. Used to be located in Clark NJ. Since I didn't live too far away, I picked the rebuilt up there, also took in my core transmission. They had many rebuilt transmissions on shelves, ready to go. Since mine was an older one('80 300SD) they had to do it special. I called them on Monday and it was ready on THR. I call that good service. They will ship transmission and they can go by UPS since they weigh less than 150 pounds. They also give instructions how to set up the vacuum valve but you will need a vacuum gage. P E H |

I would be very interested in the instructions on how to set up the vacuum valve if you still have the instructions. I would like to check mine. I replaced the vacuum valve on the trans. several years ago, and did not know anything about this adjustment. If it is possible I would appreciate it mucho. |

Larry, is there a particular Service Advisor or a particular Technician you prefer to deal with at Park Place Bedford ? Just curious. A lot of Service Advisors don't seem to want to listen to the problem or symptoms being described. They want to go with their preconceived notions. The Service Advisor I usually go for is Louis. He is an old-timer and has always been helpful. Some of the other guys seem a bit clueless. I have found the young parts guy, Randy to be very helpful, as is one of the other younger guys who were there from Becks. Some of the parts guys who came from the other Park Place location seem like they would just as soon spit on you as bother with parts for older cars.

I have not met Louis, but he is my service advisor. An old friend of mine, actually he used to be married to my wife's twin sister is my tech there. I have not yet taken my C240 in for it's first service, so I haven't actually met Louis yet. My friend John Morris is one of the techs in Louis' team. John is not a transmission specialist, but they probably install factory rebuilts anyway. I agree with other replies that a transmission from the MB dealer would be gosh awful expensive. The problem is finding a known good transmission shop. It might even be worth having one shipped from New Jersey, or wherever this known good transmission shop is. I'm sure that if you needed a common Ford or GM transmission there would be fifty places in the DFW area to find a good one. Keep posting and maybe you can find a known good shop in DFW. Good luck, |

Thanks Larry. I am sure you will like working with Louis. What I am actaully fishing for is to get the transmission vacuum and cable adjustments gone through completely so that we can get all the rough shifting problems worked out. It will probably be a couple more weeks before I have time to get the car in there.
