They are expensive 52.00 plus shipping on ebay mercedes 123 parts. That includes a new valve cover gasket for the four cylinder engine. The hardness of the steel compared to the haznet brand as they are the factory type tool is unknown to me. Also another guy sells the haznet three piece set normally for 58.00 plus shipping. This is without the gasket but does include the third wrench to stop the valve turning. He runs a listing under tools for sale in the automotive section of ebay. Also it is possible to heat up and bend two normal wrenches into a shape that makes them easier to use. Other than those two sources they are usually more expensive. Someone else may know more about availability etc. Or perhaps have a better ideal.

For the OM616 and 617, I think they are 14mm.

You can get them from performance products for about 50.00 they are bent and it makes adjusting the valves alot easer.

"the hanes manuel show them using standard wrenches.."
I am just going from memory.... but if you look at that picture in the Haynes manual I think it also says something like " camshaft removed for clarity".... LOL Have you done it with regular wrenches and then tried the ' correct' ones ? Some things in life are worth paying for...and if you do like I showed it can be reasonably cheap at the same time... |

carefull shopping you can get the real Hazet set of 3 for $58 and shipping but they routinely bring about $78...
For me it was Far..far easier with the hazet set.....but it can be done with regular wrenches...which by the way are 14mm, and assuming its thin enough...a good set of wrenches are typically too thick to work.

I bought a set of the bent ones.
They do make the job easier, but you may have to grind them down a little bit because mine were too thick. One wrench fits on top of the other, but if the bottom wrench is thicker than the nut, then it can't work. I didn't have the 3rd wrench when I did my valves, but having done it once without it, I went and bought the 3rd wrench the first chance I got. - Patrick

I bought a pair of Hazet-made Unimog wrenches (without the wrench for the bottom nut) from Samstag for less than $50. These are the same as the regular Hazet wrenches except that the handles are shorter. Some have complained that the valves for the #5 cylinder are hard to do because the long wrenches don't have enough room, but I didn't have this problem with the Unimog wrenches. The factory wrenches are very well made, and make the job MUCH easier.

after 6 hours, I'm buying them
I spent 6 hours adjusting the valves on my 1982 300D. What a pain. Today, I am buying the wrenches.
The 300D uses 2 14mm and one 25 mm. |
