Talking w126 question

i have an 83 300sd w126 body

is this the same body as the 83 560sel

and is this the same body as the 87 or 89 300sd or 560sel

sometimes the 560 has the same look but appears to be longer in the reaer.. I parked beside one and the two cars appeared to be the same length..

the reason i ask the question is because i think the 560 is just a luxury interior and big gas engine.... and if that is the case i would like to have the luxury interior in my 300sd....or is it possible to buy a 560 and stick a 5cyl disel in it.

Thumbs up

L = Long Wheel Base.

All of the vehicles with the "L" designation are 5.5 inches longer.

So, the SEL and SDL bodies are the same length.

The SD, and SE bodies are the same length (five inches shorter).

This would apply to all W126 vehicles, 1981-1991.

The interior of the 560 is a bit nicer since it is the top of the line vehicle. It normally has burlwood in lieu of the zebrano.

swaps

anything is possible, but there is a lot of stuff to change... might be simpler to find a sdl... the're basically the same... the 560 will have more stuff to maintain.

Getting the diesel engine installed in the 560 would be fine.

The problem is all of the auxiliary electrical equipment that the diesel uses but the gas engine does not. This includes the computer for the idle control, glow plug relay, interface with the dash controls and key switch, etc.

As noted above, it's probably less work to simply find a proper SDL.

For a 560SEL you'd probably want the 617 out of a 300TD so you'd have the pump for the SLS.

Most of the 'luxury' items in a 560 can be fitted to an SD - memory front seats, reclining rear seat, seat heaters, rear sunshade, rear seat headrests, power heated side mirrors, highway horn, door and rear deck speakers, AC recirc button, burl wood, etc. About the only thing not worth the effort to retrofit is SLS and it's unlikely anyone but George Barris can stretch the wheelbase properly

I find the 88-up seats to be more comfortable but maybe that's because they're typically in better shape than the 81-87 seats at this age.
