Saw a thread back some time in the Tech session I think on a part that MB should replace. I think it was a cross over or something like that, anyway I remember a silver insulated pipe running along side the engine. I have on this car what appears to be some sort of bypass or such nicely wrapped in silver insulation, and ending on one end in an interesting valve of some sort, is this the object of past discussions?? I realize this is sketchy information, but since I am reading these engines are subject to high temperature problems it worries me.

Was it the Trap Oxidizer replacement that you are thinking of?

I do believe that is what it was. I have an 86 300SDL and there was some talk of replacement by MB on that part.

I am confused, a number of posts refer to 123, 124 style as having these parts, mine is a 126, do they have the trap oxidizer?? My air filter is just behind the headlight as stated in one post, but no mention of the body style. This was a California car at one time, but may not have been purchased there.

Yes, all '86 and '87 diesels had the trap oxidizer. MB should replace it for free.

As of about a year ago MB was still performing the campaign to replace these exhaust system. The dealer I use was actually replacing these whenever a car came in the shop with the Trap Oxidizer still in place. The customer may have brought the car in for an oil change, but when they picked it up, they were surprised that they now had an entire new exhaust system at no charge.

I would call the service writer at your dealer. If they sound ignorant, call 1 800 FOR MERCEDES. I'm sure they will help you.

Thanks Larry, I will do just that. I had a good talk with the service advisor and he seemed ok with another problem, we will see on this to begin with. I think you are in the Dalles area, I spent many years outside Houston, and my ex's dad lives in Streetman just south of you. I miss Texas, but not the ex's.
