How to Test IP Vacuum Valve

How do I test IP Vacuum Valve with a mityvac so as to determine if it is good or bad...Right now it holds no vacuum no matter what..Does this mean it is bad...I have been over all the devices and vacuum devices to get my tranny to shift right...

Almost any vacuum leak can affect shifting. I just went through all that on my 240D. I installed a new vac shut off valve (I assume that's what you're talking about) as I had oil in my vac lines and the car would not shut off. A good clue is if your car will not shut off - then the valve or another line is leaking. If you car shuts off without hesitation then the problem may lie elsewhere. If you suspect it is bad replace it - you don't want it to get to the point where you have oil in your vac lines. I still had shut off issues after replacing the valve and had to track down another leak - which I found in the climate control line

Tranny shifting issues can come from many sources - there are a lot of good posts and also some good adjustment articles in the DIY sticky. I share your pain - it took me awhile to get to the bottom of my shifting issues.

On another note - I see you like Kenosha Cadillacs I'm refering to your Rambler collection. I spent some time in Kenosha, WI as a youth (American Motors Plant). Probably one of the few police forces in the country that used Ramblers

Good luck with your tranny shifting

The vacuum device I am referring to is on top of the injection pump towards the rear of the IP. Considering it is around $180 I don't want to buy it if I don't need it.

Oops, you must be talking about the Vacuum Control Valve? Mine is on the driver's side of the pump. The unit that correspondingly reduces vacuum to your tranny as you accerate? At the risk of talking about the wrong part again......find the vac line that goes to your transmission. I don't have a turbo, but it should be coming off the switchover valves on top of the valve cover. Hook up your gauge and read vacuum. As you apply throttle, the vac should drop almost all the way to 0 when at full throttle. It is supposed to bleed vacuum. The articles I referenced earlier also explain this and even how to adjust the unit if needed. Not fun, two nuts, hard to do but not impossible.

Finally got down to curing my nasty downshift which was actually caused by a malfunctioning IP Vacuum Valve previously discussed in this thread...I was going to buy a new one for $187 so I figured might as well take the old one apart and check it out. Well all that was wrong with it was there was a little sludge in the little valve inside...If I had spent the money and put a new one in it would have been cured. But I cleaned the old one with carb cleaner, put it back in and at last no nasty downshift...It was so easy I am mad at myself for not doing this sooner...Thanks to all .....
