The following is the breakdown of Cummins shares as per Yahoo Finance. None of these is Ford or gm. Looks like these are the real owners of Cummins Inc. Also why would Yahoo have a separate section for CMI if it was totally owned by another corporation?

% of Shares Held by All Insider and 5% Owners: 1%
% of Shares Held by Institutional & Mutual Fund Owners: 96%
% of Float Held by Institutional & Mutual Fund Owners: 97%

Number of Institutions Holding Shares: 10 (45% of outstanding shares)
Top ten Fund holders hold an addnl: 20% of outstanding shares
...............................................leaving 35% for all others.

How do those rumors continue to be perpetuated? If Ford owned the company, why wouldn't they use their own engines in their pickups? The Cummins company website lists the company as an independent entity and nobody even on the board of directors has direct ties to any of the big-three auto manufacturers.

I have seen it

Yes, there was a diesel car at Indy.

I have seen it, and I've probably got pictures of it someplace. It was many years ago that it ran.

When I saw it, the car was at the museum that's in the infield building on the grounds inside of the track.

indy pics

i did the search at the indy 500 site and saw the cummins duesy from 31. wow! th ehood and grill is massive... that diesel must be gargantuan compared to the gas engines of the day... the steering effort must have been terrific. the wheel base appears to have been streached also to accomodate the enormous motor.

in those days if you were still running at the time the winner took the checkered you coudl just keep running til you did 500 miles. this one must have been going pretty slow to have done it wo changing tires i wonder how long it took him to finish. i bet he passed a lot of broken cars at the end and must have been last in running order on the track most of the day.

i am going to have to take a trip down tot he museum to see it. the museum is worth atrip. they have i believe three hundred cars and rotate which ones areon display. there is also a very rare mb 300slk there that was a gift to the speedway...cool.

Not true Jim:

We are also drag racing and sled pulling with diesel pickups.

we have 9000 lb diesel pickups doing 10 second quarter miles @ around 130 mph that are daily drivers.

check out

I believe there are some big-rig drags as well as diesel pickup drags going on at Mission Raceway in British Columbia in the next few weeks.

Diesel pickup competition is big business, we have diesel dyno events going on all over the country all the time.

Not true..........

In the early to mid 1980s, Ford owned about 12% of Cummins stock , but sold it all.

Cummins is a stand alone company and produces engines for both Ford (F650 and above) and Dodge 2500 and 3500 pickups.

They also produce engines for Onan gensets and countless other medium to heavy truck and other industrial applications.

I for one would relish a diesel in F-1 thrashing the electronic gizmo gassers they call cars, the diesel with its high torque and conventional manual tranny would indeed be a pleasure to watch.

Have fun keeping it spooled with a manual transmission. I'd expect that you would get murdered because of the lag when shifting up. Keep in mind that modern F1 cars are making upwards of 800hp on their 3 liter motors - you'd need a lot of boost to try to keep up with that, and you'd sacrifice a lot of it every time you shifted. Maybe with an SMG though...
