Some Tranny Q's 1982 300d

I just got a 1982 300d turbo with the 4 speed auto last week and just got it running this week. It was sitting all winter in SoDak so needless to say it needs some work. I replaced the glow plug relay and the battery and got her started. Now i am dealing with a oil leak at the oil separator (easy fix) and a Tranny problem.

The tranny is where i need a little help. When i proceed to drive down the rode when the tranny trys to shift into drive and overdrive the RPM's rev and it dumps it in gear. Its like it is having problems grabbing the gears. I can baby it and it shifts pretty good. Ok here is the deal i got the car for $1 and i am a college student so i am not looking to spend a lot of money I.E. replacing the tranny. I am guessing that the clutchs might be going out? and am wondering how expensive that is to fix. I am also thinking that maybe it simply needs a flush and new filter?

What i am mainly here for is your expertise. I dont know trannys at all so any help is appreciated.

Next question. I looked into a used tranny for it before i trailered it down here to Colorado and found one out of a 76. The guys says it will bolt up from what the computer says and its a 4 speed and all that and also says its a turbo. Just wondering if any of you guys know if it will bolt up or not? And also if $300 is a good price for it. That price includes shipping from 3 hours away. Again thanks

The transmission has a vacuum modulator, try disconnecting the vacuum line & then see if the shifts are FIRM. IF so then vacuum controls could be the problem. THE only direct bolt-in transmissions would come from the 1981-84 300SD's!

Any other model would require swapping parts from the old transmission.
