It's a two chamber (side by side) sliver plated ceramic catalyst to trap and burn off soot.

What goes wrong with it? It will eventually plug from excessive soot (a tired turbo makes this happen faster) and/or the ceramic honeycomb breaks up. This in turn ruins the turbo.

If you have one, it will eventually fail, and MB will do a warrenty replacement of trap oxidizer with a trap catalyst in the tailpipe and give you a new turbo if the old one is damaged (they always are). Don't replace it yourself, this voids the warrenty!

My brother's SDL still had one when he got it a few years back, the local dealer wouldn't replace it until it failed. When it eventually completely plugged, they did the work, free!
