Hi

If you hadn't said about the steering getting heavier i would have said it was the brake light switch.
Try the brake light switch anyway, some say you can take it apart and clean up the points and lube it, they are not expensive $20 or £10GBP.

Fiddle with the switch and see how things go.

Hi

It is in at the brake pedal, your brake lights might still work as they should because there are four poles on the switch with four wires going to it. Think it is two seperate make and break switches.
Has your cruise stopped working also? usually another symptom.

Let me know how you get on.

cruise is working while the lights are on and another thing: at highway speeds I get like a hic-up is like someone is hitting the brake for a fraction of a second , same thing happends when the lights are coming on. I think someone on the forum mentioned something about a transmission software upgrade that cured the problem???

Hi

When i have seen the brake light switch problem before the cruise did not work so it could be something other than that.
I will keep watching to see what it is and hopefully you get it sorted soon.

Cheers,

McCool300TD
