Why are you changing oil on a cold engine ?

If the engine is cold than the oil should mostly be in the pan. It might just take a little longer for it to drain out. I wouldn't crack a line to the cooler as that could very well strip the threads on it (they're aluminum and the line fitting is brass). Brian, don't you think that's a little over-board? To each his own but personally I'm not that anal and I don't think any of our cars will be dying due to not draining the oil coolers.

Thanks
David

I miss the oil cooler drain plug on my '76 300D
OTOH, I had a great time after I drained the cooler on my '83 300D I tried to blow compressed air thru it! Ha! there was oil everywhere it ain't worth it!

Ok, here's my plan.
1. Drive car on nice freeway drive to get it up to temps.
2. Bring car home, unscrew drain plug and let hot oil drain into container.
3. While oil drains, take out old oil filter, replace o-rings and gasket, place new filter in, check vacuum hoses to make sure they're all in the right places, put cover back on.
4. Replace drain plug, and fill engine with 6 bottles of my choice, Mobil 1 15W-50 oil.
5. Start car and let it run for about a minute. Turn car off after one minute, check oil level and add if needed. Check drain plug for leaks and tighten if necessary.
6. Go inside to computer, log on to Mercedesshop.com and post that it was a success.

You know that when checking the oil after the car has been run to wipe it off then reinsert? Then you can pull it out and take an accurate reading. I think your car takes 8 quarts though, not 6. At least my '79 SD did.

Thanks
David

When I initially refill mine I only put in six because even though the manual says it holds 7.9 quarts the turbocharger and oil cooler hold some but I'm not sure how much. I put in six, back it off of the ramps, let it idle while I clean up tools and such then kill it and let it sit for about fifteen minutes or so. After reading the stick(it was just above the minimum mark after adding six quarts) I added an additional quart and was good to go. Not to hijack the thread but I chose to go with rotella t 15W-40 for the summer instead of the Mobil 1 5W-40. I hate not using synthetic but I like the extra viscosity for these Oklahoma summers. I'll probably change it again in a couple of months using rotella t then put the synthetic back in again as soon as it cools off.

Yep, it is.

I got the idea from PEH.

Since I did not strip the threads on the initial attempt, the process takes all of 60 seconds now. So, what the hell; I'll get rid of the extra three cups..............

Why not use synthetic during the summer. I changed over to synthetic a few days ago. I'm in Houston and do a lot of heavy driving.

I don't have to jack my car up to get to the drain plug; well unless I put the plastic panals back on. A new crush washer for the drain plug should come with the filter.

Where nitral gloves diesel oil is nasty stuff.

Well, I've gotten all the oil necessary for the oil change, and originally, I was planning to do the oil change early saturday morning because I'm going to be very busy that afternoon and evening. Well today, I was going to get a 15qt container for $7.94 from Wal-Mart to catch the oil, and a Mann oil filter from the foreign autoparts store, as well as those little o-rings from the dealer if the autoparts store did not have them, but today was such a hectic day that I did not get around to those places, and so, I have put the oil change off until I can get more time, perhaps next weekend.
BTW- I got under the car and saw the drain plug, it looks pretty easy to get to like ya'll said.
