Recharged AC with R12, cold..but..

The clutch to engage the AC compressor will not engage unless I directly rin 12 volts to it from the battery. In this case it blows very nice, cold air. However, what switch controls this inside the car? What switch/wire causes this clutch to engage. When I turn the "colder" knob clockwise, it switches to a different blower, but the clutch doesn't engage. Whats the deal here?

Also,

When I hold the cruise control stem to the accel up or accel down position, the car gains or loses speed respectively. However, if I hold press it quickly to hold speed, it chooses not to do so. Is the amplifier that big monstrous box on the passenger side of the engine compartment? Can I rebuild it myself if it's not totally toast?

pull=resume
push=cancel
up or down=accel/decel respectively. Up or down can also be used to set it.

The amplifier is over the driver's feet. You have to remove that underdash piece and you'll see an aluminum box, that's it. Look up at Fastlane for a pic so you know exactly what it looks like. I think you are talking about the actuator under the hood, it is rebuildable but try the amp first. The actuator is what accelerates/decelerates. Yours sounds like an electrical problem, not mechanical.

Thanks
David

there are two switches on your a/c reciever/drier. one has wires coming out of it to two plugs, the other is a short and stubby one with two wires plugged directly into it. if you jumper those two wires, the compressor clutch should engage, its possible that switch is bad. on the other hand your acc unit could be bad too.

help me understand, which car is this?

Hmm

This car is a 1975 300D, the W116 chassis. So the ACC control knob is just a knob that says colder and you turn it clockwise to get it colder. This is the only control on the AC, so it seems hard to imagine what could stob the clutch engagement

The 76 300D is a W115 chassis, not a W116 as I am sure was just a typo...the W116 never had a diesel till '78

Oh

Definitely a typo. Meant W115, how foolish. In any case, what switch activates this clutch on the compressor

115's have a vacuum operated relay. If you have a vacuum leak you might not have A/C. You might want to try the vintage forum to see if someone is familiar with that system.

Are you sure that your AC system is adequetly charged?
I would also suspect the vac switch if your auto has one...that car is old enough that it probably needs some attention.

I'm not sure about your specific model, but there could be an overpressure cut off switch which has been activated. There is on mine. Having too much refrigerant can be very dangerous to you and your car. Did you fill it yourself - and if so, did you use guages?
