cam has mild oxidation, how to polish?

i had my cylinder head machined so the cam was left exposed, now it has mild oxidation. most of it can be removed by just rubbing my thumb over it, how do i polish it further? should i use steel wool? or do i just wipe it with oil and let the lifters do the work?

I would wipe it with oil and let the lifters do the work.

If you can get yourself some Scothbrite pads, they will do wonders. They will polish the hell out of the surface, without removing any measurable material.

Future reference...spray copious amounts of WD-40 on bare metal parts and it'll protect in the short term.

Dad got this cool stuff like they put on cranks and whatnot when you get them new. Its like a sort of coating...pretty neat stuff.

Scotchbrite pads work well for this especially the fine white ones.

The classic method of polishing journals and shafts is to use crocus cloth, a superfine emery cloth.

You wrap it around a shaft or journal, then wrap a leather bootlace around it and polish by pulling the ends of the bootlace, back and forth.

For a cam lobe you will have to do it by hand, it's too lumpy for the bootlace trick.

It might seem like a bit of over-kill, but this should do the trick!
