To shut off what? Fuel, IP rack, air, vacuum?

An electric SOV on the IP rack would get rid of the need for vacuum on the engine (W/O an automatic tranny).

Sorry, should have been more clear. A electric replacement for the vacuum shut-off valve on the back of the IP. After answering to a thread and saying how they dump oil in the lines when they go bad, what would it take to make it a reliable electric solonoid?

I have thought that before too, most recently when my dad's had a vacuum check valve (two of them) go bad and prevented the shutoff from working, the valve itself was still good, just not enough vacuum to trigger it. Electronic shutoff would simplify it too

More electronics? When asking for more electrics, think Jag.

Thanks

Clarification.
Electrics - switches, relays, solenoids, lights motors etc. eg starter motor, head lights, electric fuel pumps.
Electronics = Transistors, Diodes, ICs, Microprocessors, triacs etc. eg cruise control, tachometer, engine management, Alternator (esp regulator)

So, an electric shutoff control (solenoid)

I get really Pi$$ed off when ppl confuse the terms or interchange them with no regard to their usage. Something like when ppl are upset when an engine is called a motor.

link it to manual shutoff?

Easiest way might be to link to manual shutoff rather than directly into IP. Is that what you were thinking of?

I like the idea of a manual shutoff. Great big red lever in the middle of my dash.....

Tony, how about the use of aerial instead of antenna? That always gets me.
BTW, don't pay any attention to NASCAR drivers. They all have "motors" in their cars.

Wes

A friend of mine has an 83 300D with a failed shutoff system. As a temporary repair, he rigged a bracket to use a manual choke control on the stop handle and ran it under the dash. It worked so well, it became 'it's only temporary, unless it works', and has been in place for several years now. Any time he stops somewhere for a few minutes, the car stays running (but he can take the keys inside with him and leave the doors locked). When he wants to stop, all you do is pull the handle outwards and it stops immediately.

I thought about rigging a simple vacuum switch under the dash for that reason. That was I turn the key off, disabling everything and locking the steering wheel, but still leave it running for quick stops.

These are all ideas. I'm out of school for the summer and need things to do.

12v operated vacuum switches are available and would serve the purpose of shutdown, but the post was also concerned with the potential of oil getting into the vacuum system.

My comment is that you could put a filter into the vacuum lines to the shutoff and the modulator and monitor them for oil. Repair faulty diaphragms or replace faulty modulators.
Aerial is correct, it refers to a simple, wire like system. Antenna refers to a multi element system which may comprise more than one aerial, or have arrays of aerials.
BTW, these are my definitions and I am willing to be corrected by people who know more than I do.
