Something Fishy about this one....

I always thought a MB diesel camper would be cool (or a G-wagon w/ the roof tent set up I saw a German couple camping in in death valley once, but I digress).
Anyway, I stumbled over this one on eBay, but it doesn't look like a real deal MB van to me

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=4552818597&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

It almost looks like someone put a 616 in a VW camper, changed around the front end and some dash pieces and called it a 206D. The wheels and taillights look vdub too...

Any thoughts?

hanomag

i believe that this camper is properly called a hanomag. i believe it is made in germany and the mb diesel may be original equipment. when in europe in the seventies i saw many different brands of car with mercedes diesels in them being used as taxies, seat, fiat, and others... also small trucks. when equipped with the mb diesels they would have a small chrome emblem that said "mercedes benz diesel."

not all were taxies. i often saw spanish chryslers i think they were called "barreros" or similar. they had a model that was a 66 dodge dart shell with a mercedes diesel and slightly different grill and such... rather like the canadian versions of chevy etc.

i dont think the hanomags wore mb badging except the engine labels noted above.

btw the spanish barreros came with decked out leather seats and was a luxury vehicle. it was a big car in spain at that time... prob about the same size as a fintail mb...perhaps a little bigger even.
