excessive smoke

Hi guys I just bought a 83 300sd that needed a starter.I drove 11 hours both way to pick it up,got it loaded, back home and running in 12 hours. My problem is that at first it wasn't smoking at all but now that I have driven it a little bit it is starting to smoke horribly. It smokes blueish white smoke at idle if you drive it a few miles down the road it will quit.If you let it idle for a while again it will start to smoke again. If you drive it for a long distance more than 10 miles it will not smoke at idle any more after that.It had been sitting for over a year before I got it and I didnt drain the tank before starting it.When you shut it off it makes a weird noise like one of those old toys that are metal and you spin them and they make a grinding noise.Have owned several diesels but never a mercedes. So if you have any ideas write them in a way that a dummy can understand.Any help will be greatly appreciated.
