I've actually been thinking about this a lot. This pic is what I've been using to scratch my head with... I just can't see how that larger unit is supported, if at all. It almost appears the manifold supports all the weight. It's off a 5.9 Cummins but same principal applies.

Another option for the 617 I've found is a hybrid KKK for the one I just picked up. A local place, Majestic Turbo, clips the turbine blades and stuff in a K27 compressor (that is a BIG turbo, it'll make over 25psi @ 6500rpm on a 3.4L BMW... it could go higher but it just blew the headgasket at that point ) for a KKK. It'll spool better than the stock T3 with better topend. I'm just curious what a ported KKK could do...

On the 603s, it looks as if even the stock turbo is good to nearly 300hp from some data I have obtained from another member on here. I don't see why the same can't apply from above. Even to get to that level, a modified fuel pump (not just adjusted) will have to be installed.

If we can hit near 300hp with the stock OM603 turbo, I'll be plenty happy...

As soon as I figure out the exact KKK model, I can tell ya. I have some appx power specs they are capable of...

I have a spare KKK turbo (OM603) that I could look up the nameplate data on, if it helps...

Sure, see what you can find. Apparently the four digits after the "K" is representative of the inducer and exducer sizes.

KKK turbo data for 1986/87 OM603 (with air recirc valve)

Well, I'm not sure if this helps, but here you go:

Nameplate numbers:

86 867 0070
5324 970 6700

Numbers stamped into the housing
==========================
5326 5792
61,2 / 18,3
--------------
5326 5795
61,2 / 13

It looks to me like the 300sd has all kinds of room for an intercooler inside the bumber, and it should get great air flow in that position with the air slots. The slots on the far sides of the bumper are not open through the bumper but could easily be cut for air-flow to a huge intercooler all the way across the bumper.

pics of egt probe location

brandon-
I thought I saw some pictures on the forum here of where you tapped your exhaust manifold for the egt probe. I can't find them. Any chance you could post a couple?

It looks like...

it looks like your probe uses the same 1/4 NPT probe as mine. About how far would you say your probe extends inside the manifold. No concerns about drilling a hole large enough for the probe? My probe has about 2" of probe sticking beyond the threaded nut. Should that fit?

Okay this is where it gets tricky. What I did was take a straw (or something thin) and run it into the hole and feel for how far the other side is away (its not as far as you might think. Make SURE you get your angle right...thats VERY important so that you don't hit internal baffle type things.

The pipe threads are most likely the same. Obviously drill a pilot hole first and work your way up. THe cast drills real nice.

I put some never-cease on my probe and the probe depth is actually adjustable (mine uses a compression type fitting on the other side of the part that screws into the manifold. You can thus adjust the depth. Yours should be adjustable too.

I put mine just over half way into the space. I think the manual calls for 1/2-2/3 of the total depth. I've have very quick reading changes with this setup and it seems to be working pretty well.

Let me know if you have any more questions. Feel free to email or private message if its long. Thanks!

I have more pictures that I need to put together into a online DIY page...just haven't done it yet

Incidentally,

How many people have tried the full load adjustment as written here, and what success stories, or cautionary tales have come about as a result?
