Glue.
Weren't the W116 cars the last ones to have the fenders glued on? I don't think they used any adhesive on the W123's, and I know they didn't on the 126. Regardless, I think the W123 cars are the hands-down winners (I am, as folks are probably starting to guess, extremely biased, though).
Let's consider density, shall we? My W126 300SD weighed in at 4750 lbs., I think. Now, my 300TD is CONSIDERABLY smaller than the 126, but weighs over 150 lbs. more. There you have it! Jay. |

Subtract 930 lbs and you get 3820. That is the curb weight of your vehicle(includes a full tank of fuel). With you sitting in it, and whatever stuff you carry, the wieght of the vehicle probably exceeds 4K anyway. BTW, the wagon has a higher load capacity. Subtract 1050 lbs from GVWR.

Relative to the Duesenbergs noted above, I would have agreed until reading about this incident in the ACD website the other day. Really a sad outcome!! Links below to article and pictures......

W126 (sedan or coupe) W123 (sedan, coupe or wagon) W124 The 124 is definitely a notch lower than the 126 and 123, both of which are pretty close overall. The 140 is down with the 124, perhaps slightly below it. The 140 has BULK but lacks the tanklike feeling that is the topic of the discussion. Weight/bulk does not equal a vault/tank feeling. I'd rather be in a crash in a 126 than any other car -- far more metal between you and the outside world. Cheers, Gerry |

I asked them what they do with the engines -- they rebuild/repair them in Nigeria and put them into various Benz sedans and trucks, most with over 1 million miles on the chassis, to keep them going. They told me that the 123 is the best chassis, followed by the 126, for doing this. They will put anywhere from 3-5 engines in the chassis over their service life. They have very ingenious ways of servicing and repairing these engines on a shoestring. They prefer the non-electronic engines, and diesels and 103 motors are most preferred. They also put the Benz diesel engines in other non-Benz cars and trucks as well, becuase they last longer and work better than the other makes of engines. Cheers, Gerry Here's a photo of the truck getting loaded up with engines.... |

To my knowledge, the W124s typically run around 3,500 pounds (my E500 is around 3,900, but it's heavier and has extra equipment); the 126 runs around 3,900-4,200 pounds I believe. Cheers, Gerry |

I know it's a gasser but with 251,000+ miles my W124 '94 wagon is a tank, a very hard working tank. She gets her oil changed 12 times a year.

I agree with the late "Dieseling Doktor", Marshall Booth, (post #13) and I really think it is the 1981-1985 300SD that is surely the toughest Panzerwagen diesel sedan of them all.

I got rear ended by a medium size truck on my 240D in NY, it was quite a hit and all I felt inside was a thud. My trunk and fender was damaged badly reflecting the impact. I read somewhere that the W123 was designed specifically and were meant to be driven in bomb ridden Beirut as well as the roads in Africa so I am not surprised.

After a long time away from this board I signed on today and was refreshing my memory with some old posts and found out that our Marshall Booth has passed away, it was a sad moment, all the help and advised he provided and his dedication to diesel motoring are rarely seen, may we someday have another Diesel Doktor while never forgetting the one and only. Rest in piece.
