Just opened the system and found some metal ( aluminum) in the manifold hose. I have removed the manifold hose from the car and drained it. I did not find any particles except the metal
The manifold fittings that are on the compressor showed no "black death". I drained the manifold hose into a container and found clear oil and 2-3 small particles of aluminum. So it seems the compressor failed and it was not a "black death" situation. I will still flush the system , replace the R/D and check the expansion valve for particles. I am considering a new compressor instead of using my older one I had on the shelf. Photo #1 The high pressure hose end outlet to the condenser. Photo #2 The compressor manifold output Photo #3 The manifold suction into the compressor Photo #4 The container with the drained oil and aluminum particles (arrows). So now its time to clean and flush all the hoses, condenser and evaporator, check the expansion valve and install the new/other compressor. Dave

OK guys I need your help.
Just removed the engine bay hoses. and flushed them with mineral spirits. I will finish them with AC flush. I saved the flush in a large container to examine it after the flush. I had no real large particles ( but the large aluminum ones, about the size of a pencil lead in diameter, in the manifold hose) . Some extremely small ones in the flush maybe 6-7. but the fluid is black. So the question is after a system has run 1.5 years and then flushed Is it normally black in color. Is this normal residue from the system or am i looking at "black death". I'm concerned only for flushing considerations. when looking in the PF condenser. the inside, as far as I could see was spotless. The fluid coming out was quite clean. So how much particulate matter should I have? How blackish should the flush be? Attached is a picture The bucket shows that fluid color and particle size. The fitting is the attachment point of the PF condenser. the inside is quite clean and this is how it appeared before flushing. Dave

That is burned oil.....
and should not be there... I think you need to keep flushing or replace those hoses or whatever so that you do not subject your newly refreshed system to those abrasive residuals... |

The expansion valve.
Dave Leathermang Thanks for the info. All the hoses are 1.5 years old. It is possible when I lost the freon with the broken schrader valve that I should have added more oil than I did. OR it was the compressor failing and burning up the oil. I'm not really sure. So I'll flush and flush and flush and then put it back together and see what happens. New to get a new expansion valve. Some inline filters and "flush" the compressor I removed 2 years ago, it had not failed. Dave

Dave,
Yes this is black death. It is going to be VERY difficult to flush it thoroughly enough to prevent a new compressor from being destroyed. You need to see about a suction side filter. Call Mark McCain at McCains Auto Air and tell him what you're dealing with and he can probably sell you a suction side filter. Their number is 669-0669, but I don't remember if it is area code 972 or 214. They are on Floyd Circle, just North of the TI plant at the NorthEast corner of 75 and 635. I've been there done that and I would NOT put it back together without finding a way to put in a suction side filter. When I did mine many years ago, I did not know about a suction side filter and ended up losing the second compressor almost immediately. I also had used a rebuilt R4 which didn't help anything. Best of luck, |

OK, just got to keep this post going.
Went by the dealer for quite a few things and to talk to the mechanics about my SL and 300TD AC system. The SL guru and the service tech which I trust (owns 5 W123s) both have the AC hoses rebuilt when the compressor trash the lines, as in my case. The SL guy actually uses Kims Hydraulic Hoses here in Ft. Worth and has been very happy with there work. They have been around since the 50's. So, I will rebuild the lines. All of them for about $180. leathermang The manual does say that you should replace the manifold hose with a compressor failure. BUT this is due to the majority of the manifold hoses have a muffler in them. The muffler traps particles and is very hard to flush properly. The W123 manifold hose does NOT have the muffler so it is reusable if cleaned properly. The SM has had 3-4 manifold hoses rebuilt with out any problems. He is the one that advised me about the mufflers in the other models. The SM recommended denatured alcohol to clean my metal section of the hoses due to the burnt oil in my system. The SL guy concurred with what the SM said. Now I have to fix the annoying miss in the SL. Probably a bad injector. But thats another post. Dave

Dave,
I vaguely remember a hose shop in Ft. Worth that my Dad recommended highly. I went there once in the seventies. It was on the East side of a North/South street, maybe Berry Street. Is that it? I expect the rebuilt hoses to serve you will. Good luck with the project, |
