My new 300SD the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Well I made the jump it is sitting in the garage. So far my total investmant is $500 for the car and $35 for oil a filter and an air filter. I drove it around a bit yesterday and it drives very nicely, the suspension is tight and was gone through not to long ago. The brakes kind of suck but they were covered in rust and after they cleaned up a bit are ok. I think a brake fluid change and inspection is in order though. I changed the oil and the air filter was pretty shot so I replaced that as well. The fuel filters are due, it lacks power and well they look very old.
I have a few 617 related questons:
What would cause one to skip and run like crap? This car has been sitting since last fall and hasn't really been run. I think if I adjust the valves, change the fuel filters and run the crap out of it, that may help a lot. But the bad skip bothers me, it seems like a lazy injector. I cracked the lines yesterday but was unable to tell for sure what cylinder is acting up, but I suspect number 3. I drove it like 10 miles yesterday and it runs pretty decent once it is used. No power though the air filter helped a bit but I think the fuel filters are clogged. The engine starts right up with dead glow plugs at least.

Other then that the car is in decent shape, kind of rusty but thats ok. The paint shines up real nice.

Are there any stations selling B20 up your way?.............if so grab spare filters and run that in it...Diesel Purge too....an italian tuneup once you make sure the brakes work for example might be helpful.

My W123 is running awesome these days...unbelievibly well in fact....and all I have done was tweak the alda and the Bowden cable..but I did that a while back and its running far better now than shortly after the adjustment....I can attribute that to a steady diet of B20 and frequent Italian tuneups...

Other than filters and the basic items, I don't think you should do anything to it until you put 1000 miles on the clock. Then see if it settles down properly.

They take quite awhile to get running properly, as evidenced by BHD's 123 and others, after sitting for such a long time.

I'd use the Power Service since you already have it for the SDL.

Well I remember when I first got my SDL it really didn't run that well and smoked a lot until I started putting a few hundred miles a week on the thing. I topped off the tank with some fresh fuel, it only took 8 gallons but it can't hurt. I also threw in a heavy load of Biobor and Power service. I need to get a few basic things I just priced them out on Fastlane $63+ some coolant and a bottle of brake fluid. I think I may just wait until August, before I change the fuel filters. I am buying a cover Sunday and it will be sitting in the back yard until I need it in August.

Hey Hattie...
Just drive that SD like you stole it and clean the crap out of the engine. My 300SD ran like crap until I romped on it good and solid like.

Also delivery valve seals are a problem in these in the high miles however missing is probably just dirty old sitting stuff that can be driven out.

If you get some pictures or whatever, I can host them for you.

Thanks for the offer Brandon! I'll snap a few pics today before I take it out of the garage. I was at work yesterday but my dad adjusted the vlaves and lubed the throttle links. He said all of the valves were pretty tight and it does start and run better. I cleaned it up pretty good for now, the paint has some potential I just need to decide if I want to spend a day going at it. But for now I put two fast coats of Meguiars Gold Class on it and soaked the inside in 303. I suspect the original primer pump may be leaking, I probably will swap that out when I do the filters. Won't those cause an air leak and the engine not to run right?

Tey could cause it not to run or have a severe loss of power. Yours is probably leaking and just making a mess. You still want to replace it of course.

Thanks
David

Sometimes they leak all over the place and the engine is no wiser for it. Sometimes they allow air to get into the system and the engine doesn't like it one bit.

The pump on the SD leaked a pretty decent amount of fuel if you touched the piston, but the engine was never affected by it.

Change fuel filters, diesel purge, run the ***** out of it. Should run fine after a few good thrashing sessions.

Let's see, fresh oil, fresh filters and valve adjustment then a tankful of B20 biodiesel and a 300-500 mile trip may clear the cobwebs out of it. I recently did this on mine (B20@$2.19/gal. ) and man does she purr.

The B20 did wonders for my W123.....but to be honest it took about 3K miles of running it on B20 to make the difference from shortly after I bought it to the way its running now..it wasn't overnight. B20 helps...gradually...Power service might give it an extra kick....and Italian tuneups when you know its safe to flog will do the rest.

I was running my home made B100 and the effects are pretty quick. Might be worth it to run a tank or half tank of b100 through there and clear it all out.

Stuff sure does wonders cleaning
