Well, this one is not exactly a "rust bucket". It's unitbody is basically intact. I wouldn't reject it outright due to some rust in a few spots.

However, the problem with all of the mechanical issues, coupled with the rust, and added to the bumpers and trim make this specific vehicle not worthy of a bid.

Yep, you can beat the CA vehicles for perfect bodies. But, it's tough to buy them sight unseen, no matter where they are. In CA you aren't going to steal one with a perfect body, so, you must look it over first, or have someone do it for you.

True, you still have to have a good inspection of a western car, but I think if you are in it for the long haul that's the way to go.

I got mine from a guy on the Ritter-Easley list for $900. Known bad tranny (turned out to be bad front pump)but perfect body, perfect interior 125K miles. We happened to be going on a trip to Cali and passing right by the guy's house , so I sent him a deposit and went to look at it a few weeks later. Looked good at the time, had it sent home for $800. This was last October. I have been sidetracked with a lot of stupid things (mostly hurricane related) since then. I should have the tranny back in the car in a few weeks. We shall see.

I think there are still few of these nice W116 gems out there. I think if you spend some time prospecting you can find a nice one with a perfect body, but with a cureable mechanical issue out west. The week after I got my 300SD home, a perfect W116 77 280SE landed in my favorite upullit- a Northern Cali car!. I was able to peel all the perfect sheet metal off it ( plus the tranny that I am using for parts)for little money , just in case I ever need any of it.
